Stealthiest U.S. submarine makes rare appearance in Arabian Sea
Nikkei Asia ^

Posted on 10/20/2022 3:32:51 AM PDT by FarCenter

TOKYO -- Once submerged, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine typically remains under water for 70 days. Virtually undetectable, the Ohio-class SSBN is the stealthiest submarine in the U.S. Navy fleet.

Unlike the Los Angeles-class or Virginia-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarines that carry conventional weapons and can make port visits around the world, nuclear-missile equipped SSBNs typically do not make public appearances. In the rare case that they do, it is either in U.S. waters or in the ports of America's top ally, the U.K.

But on Thursday morning, Asia time, the U.S. Central Command tweeted that its commander, Gen. Michael Kurilla, had visited the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS West Virginia (SSBN 736) at an undisclosed location in international waters in the Arabian Sea.

The unprecedented move in the Indian Ocean region, roughly equidistant from Moscow and Beijing, had analysts contemplating who the signaling was intended for and what the message was.

The timing comes as China holds a weeklong national congress of the Chinese Communist Party, where President Xi Jinping is expected to be given an unprecedented third term as leader. At the meeting, Xi described the unification of Taiwan with mainland China as "a historic mission" of the party and threatened to use force, if necessary, to achieve it.

...

The SSBN appearance also comes roughly a month after Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised speech that Russia would defend its territorial integrity "by all means" after suffering a series of losses on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine -- in effect warning that it might use tactical nuclear weapons.

The West Virginia is one of the six SSBNs stationed at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia. While the speed at which an SSBN travels underwater is classified, the month since the Putin statement could match the time it would take for the West Virginia to travel from its home base on the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. to the Arabian Sea.

Suddenly the Pentagon lifts the shell to show Russia & China “the Pea”? This shows a lack of professionalism. Who is calling the shots?

If our “stealthiest” submarine makes an “appearance”, how is that a gppd thing?

“Virtually undetectable, the Ohio-class SSBN is the stealthiest submarine in the U.S. Navy fleet.”

That’s a joke, maybe true 30 years ago.

Unless the sub stays right near Washington or Georgia.

It’s so stealthy that Nikkei Asia was able to spot it.

Using a US sub as Joe Bidens pecker?

Yeah, that’ll work.

Soon you will see the Arabian Sea full of Russian and China PRC submarines.

What is Biden going to do? Nuke Saudi Arabia for not increasing oil production? Remember, nobody f**s with Joe Biden.

Now they know we’re staked out in the Arabian sea. Don’t you think Russia will be stepping up it’s patrols using attack subs to track our ballistic subs. Who’s the idiot that made this decision.

It’s part of the globalist NeoCon warmongering dong measuring contest.

Probably stating “here we are, and you had no idea we were here.”

Nah, you're wrong, McGee.

Virtually undetectable, means you can detect it, but it's hard to do and it is the stealthiest sub in the US fleet. That is true.

With today's technology undetectable maybe a thing of the past.

“Virtually undetectable” allows for the possible use of magnetic anomaly detectors.
