As Russia faces growing setbacks in Ukraine, it is increasingly turning to Iran for help, in a development that has sparked concern from the West and Tehran’s regional adversaries.
Sources familiar with US intelligence told CNN that Iran has sent military trainers to Crimea to train and advise the Russian military on use of Iranian-built drones that Moscow has used to rain down terror on cities across Ukraine.
The presence of Iranian personnel in occupied Ukrainian territory would mark a significant escalation in Iran’s involvement in the war in support of Russia, a new phase in their budding military alliance.
Reuters on Tuesday reported that Iran may supply Russia with surface-to-surface missiles.
Despite their differences, Iran and Russia have been getting closer because they “share the same threat perception,” said Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a hawkish lobby group in Washington. “They see a regional order aligned against them by an extra-regional power,” he said, referring to the United States.
If Iran sells missiles to Russia, this would mean that it is “moving some of its most accurate, some of its most precise ammunition closer to Europe,” he said. “It is critical to see Iranian involvement with Russia as part of its larger war with the West.”
Major General Yahya Safavi, a top military aide to Iran’s supreme leader, on Tuesday boasted that 22 countries are now in the market for Iranian drones.
Iran, which before the 1979 revolution imported most of its weapons, now manufactures more than 80% of its military equipment, he was cited as saying by semi-official news agency Fars.
Iran and Russia repeatedly denied the Islamic Republic’s involvement in Ukraine, but analysts have said that the news around Iranian drones isn’t necessarily seen as bad publicity in Tehran.

Apparently the towel heads are able to turn out some useful munitions. I’m actually surprised, but then again most of this stuff can be learned from youtube.
Let me know when Iran reaches the US/UK/EU/NATO level of player.
Thanks, Brandon.
These msm articles about Iranian involvement is coming from Potato brain and his security apparatus with the intent to try and pressure Israel to give Ukraine weaponry. So obvious.

To understand why the Shahed/Geran has had such a dramatic impact on the battlefield, it’s important to conceptualize the niche it fills. Russia right now has a gap in “medium strike” options. You have conventional artillery/MLRS, and then there’s a huge gap to Iskander/kalibr.
A heavy MLRS like Polonez-M or PHL-16 can fill that gap, providing cost-effective and repeated strikes on smaller targets, but Russia doesn’t have heavy MLRS that can reach out to 300km+. So in steps the Shahed/Geran, to take care of targets when an Iskander is overkill.
The Shahed/Geran carries a payload of 40kg HE, which is about half the size of the payload of a HIMARS or Uragan rocket. Or about double the payload of a Grad rocket. It has extreme range that has been quoted as more than 2000km.
“Shahed-136” AKA “Geran-2” drone:
—50 to 60 kg warhead
—1080 miles or 1800 kg range
—110 mph or 180 kph speed
—Very hard for Ukraine to intercept
Financial toll on Ukraine of downing drones ‘vastly exceeds Russian costs’
If they do, Russia might give the Iranians some nukes.
This is getting way out of control.
Israel will not export the Iron Dome because they know it will be revealed to the world that it’s only partly effective against Hamas’ home-made unguided stove-pipe rockets, not modern missile and drone threats.
See 10.
Thanks.
Think Axis—Nazi Germany, fascist Italy and Imperial Japan. They help each other out. New Axis, Russia, Iran and China (with a few other states like Syria, Serbia, North Korea, etc...) They will help in any way they can. They may well be more loyal to each other than we are to our allies (like Germany).
Yep. Look at the laughable source. MSN-CNN?
No agenda there. 😆
I don’t know if you remember But the Iranians actually stole a drone from the CIA they took it over and then landed it in Iran
Ah, so THIS is why the msm suddenly cares about the latest protests in Iran.
And now the putinistas are on the side of Iran.
Or just the opposite. They will see how effective it really is ;-)
Iran, Russia and China are drawing closer together.
Pretty much 100% Joe’s fault.
They think the common man is stupid and doesn’t notice the intent of these articles. Behind the scenes, Israel’s arm is being twisted by Nuland in particular. They need to stand firm. It will not serve Israel’s long term interest to become embroiled in Ukraine. You can’t just give weapons system like you give a box of chocolates. You have to give technical advisers and instructors ( which this article suggest Iran is doing) . Behind Ukraine stands a cabal of Israel haters, that routinely side with the paleostines. They will pat Israel on the back if they get involved, but stab them in the back later on.
