Florida Senator Rick Scott Defends Social Security Plans on Fox News
Scott’s “11-Point Plan to Rescue America” included a provision that all legislation would have to be re-passed every five years, leading to questions about Social Security’s future.
The plan has been controversial. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the Senate Minority leader, has expressed his public opposition — while Democrats have seized on some of its specific proposals, including a call for everyone in the country, even the very poor, to pay federal income taxes.
Also controversial has been the plan’s approach to Social Security. While the program is only mentioned briefly, Scott’s document says it would “force Congress to issue a report every year telling the public what they plan to do when Social Security and Medicare go bankrupt.” In addition, the plan calls for “no government assistance unless you are disabled or aggressively seeking work.” It also calls for all legislation to sunset after five years, requiring Congress to pass laws again if they are considered to be worth keeping.
“We will not have as part of our agenda a bill that raises taxes on half the American people and sunsets Social Security and Medicare within five years,” McConnell said last week. “That will not be part of the Republican Senate majority agenda.”
“No one that I know of wants to sunset Medicare or Social Security, but what we’re doing is we don’t even talk about it. Medicare goes bankrupt in four years. Social Security goes bankrupt in 12 years,” Scott said, referencing last year’s Social Security Trustees report, which had the main trust fund running out a year earlier than previously projected.
“I think we ought to figure out how we preserve those programs. Every program that we care about, we ought to stop and take the time to preserve those programs.”
I understand what point he was trying to make, but I saw him saying all this without any detail in an alection year.

Sixty-five was first designated to be the retirement age in
1935. I believe the Life Expectancy has increased enough
to be able to absorb a few more years.
Remember that this would be the second time the age has
been raised. My ex can’t get full SS until 67 now. I’d
imagine there are people younger than her that are already
at 68, perhaps a little more.
Do I like this? Not necessarily. The point is, if SS is
going to have to be adjusted, it is the least painful way
to do it.

You mentioned people getting laid off due to age, to avoid
SS exposure. (inferred, I believe)
If you get laid off, it can lop off your eligibility to
receive a pension from the employer. It will not affect
your SS if you have your quarters in.
Maybe we could counter it by pointing out there are significantly fewer social security recipients since many died in nursing homes during the pandemic, you know, where they were forced by Dem governors.

No, my point is that these days it is common for big companies to lay off older workers. And it is uncommon for companies of any size to hire older workers. So you have a lot of people. age 60-plus, who are unemployed even though not due to their own choice or desire. Right now, at least they can start taking Social Security payments at age 62 if they need money
But they won’t have that option If the Social Security age gets raised to age 70 , as some Republicans have proposed. Millions of unemployed seniors will have to wait years - until their 70th birthday - to begin receiving Social Security, and many will struggle financially as a result

I can’t say that this won’t be a problem for some, because
there will be some people out there who will run into

Clear back to the 1970s I was running into people who were
let go like this. It’s been a problem all along.
Today you’d be surprised how many job openings there are
even at fast food places. We’re talking $20 per hour plus
in some places, and some of them are even offering signing
bonuses of up to $500 dollars.
A lot of businesses are shuttering much earlier than
they used to, because they can’t staff their establishments.
This is probably a better time than many periods in the
past, even if someone is laid off.

Social Security is okay for the time being. I’m not sure
exactly when it is supposed to meet some failure deadline,
but it isn’t now.

typically lived until she was 64.
Today our lifespan is 76.61 for men, and 81.65 for Women.
The age of eligibility will have done up five years, but
the lifespan will have done up 16.61 and 17.65 years.
The important thing is to start a tax deferred savings
program and hopefully get an employer matching funds
benefit.
It also pays to see if you can find a job with a business
that has its own retirement plan.
Having two or three sources of income after retirement is
helpful.

Not really. It's a case of Democrats twisting what Republicans have said and a troll posting the Den regurgitation. A little research and I find Senator Ron Johnson said on a radio show this month that Social Security and Medicare shouldn’t be “mandatory” programs and should be subject to yearly renewal decisions in Congress.
The Dems then start screaming Republicans want to cut or end it. Republicans have long said that people should be able to opt out and invest on their own.
