Inside the more than 130-year-old Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal — which was battered by Hurricane Sandy ten years ago — state officials announced a lawsuit against five major oil and gas companies on Tuesday afternoon.
The 200-page civil suit says the companies, as well as a petroleum trade association, have knowingly lied to New Jerseyans about the existence and impact of climate change and the length at which the fossil fuels they have helped to burn worsen the planet.
The companies, state officials said, have known since at least the 1950s that the burning of fossil fuels is a major driver of climate change which environmental experts say has made already catastrophic storms like Sandy more damaging.
“But instead of sharing that knowledge, these companies undermine the science. They lie to us. It was intentional. It wasn’t some error of omission,” Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette said at a press briefing held at Liberty State Park on Tuesday. “Because the science was inconvenient for them. Not for us, not for the people. But for them. It signaled now what is well known: that the planet is warming at an alarming rate.”
Tuesday’s lawsuit names Exxon Mobil, Shell Oil, Chevron, BP, ConocoPhillips, and the American Petroleum Institute, a trade group of which all the companies are members. Attorney General Matt Platkin, as well as officials with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and the Department of Environmental Protection, said the lawsuit was filed on behalf of New Jersey residents.

Big Oil is in bed with Deep State.
Thus is just another money laundering scheme.
Consumers will be the ones coughing up.
This is beyond ridiculous that someone shoulf be sued for stating their opinion.
Can we sue the largest 5 universities and colleges for denying 2 genders exist?
Really how so?
‘member how Barak destroyed the value of coal company stock and property until his buddies could buy up a lot of it and then the pressure came off?
Because science belongs in the courtroom.
Silly question time.
“If Oil is the result of decomposed animals/plants; then shouldn’t the Spectral Analysis of Oil and animal/plant life be similar? They should be made from the same ratio of elements”
They are not. I wonder why?
The judicial system is now used as an attack dog against political opponents like Alex Jones.
I completely agree. This is just another scam for more money. Call their bluff by shutting off the power they so hate.
Agreed, cut off all oil and gas delivery to the state immediately.
Ditto
They’re taking the “big tobacco” angle. Simple question to the court: what is the historical optimal, stable climate, and you must conclusively prove it.
if you call a dog’s tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?
he still only has 4 legs, no matter what you call the tail... just because you say man is responsible for climate change, you still haven’t proved it in a court of law.
I agree with your suggestion that the suppliers stand down for some period of time in order to demonstrate that "fossil fuels" are crucial to the state's economy. And, no, fossil fuels are not from fossils, as abiotic generation of hydrocarbons -- which the Greenies say is debunked -- is how the mantle of the earth works.
Boycott New Jersey, oil companies! Even if only for a week....
I like that idea. Let there be consequences to their actions.
Don’t know how old these clowns are, but their lawsuit is going back to the 50’s, but in the 70’s and early 80’s we are going to freeze to death because of the coming Ice Age.
More thought crimes... what a load of corrupt s4it.
“Can we sue the largest 5 universities and colleges for denying 2 genders exist?”
LOL. “They” say there are 50,000 or however many different gender types out there but you are an “-ist” if you says men and women are different.
I’m glad I got my “common sense” many years ago, because it is in short supply these days.
Why, then, can’t we sue the state of New Jersey and the rest for deliberately ruining the lives of its citizens, knowing since 1789 that it’s unconstitutional policies would lead to a less perfect union and a generally degraded welfare?
Good point. Any info on chemical composition to compare?
