“I’m my own man’: Colorado Republican Senate nominee fires back at Trump

— Joe O’Dea, the Republican nominee for US Senate from Colorado, fired back at Donald Trump on Monday after the former President slammed him as a “RINO” and suggested Trump’s supporters wouldn’t vote for a “stupid” person like O’Dea.

In a statement to CNN, O’Dea, the CEO of a Colorado construction company, didn’t walk away from the criticism he’s been leveling at Trump, including on Sunday when he told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” that he would “actively” campaign against Trump and for other GOP candidates if the former President runs again. O’Dea also told Bash that Trump should have done more to prevent the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

“I’m a construction guy, not a politician,” O’Dea said in his statement to CNN. “President Trump is entitled to his opinion but I’m my own man and I’ll call it like I see it. Another Biden, Trump election will tear this country apart. DeSantis, Scott, Pompeo or Haley would be better choices. These elections should be focused on Joe Biden’s failures – supercharged inflation, a broken border, rampant crime, a war on American energy – not a rehash of 2020. America needs to move forward.”

O’Dea, who has taken a more moderate position on abortion rights than other Republicans, is in a competitive race against Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet in the blue-leaning state.

Trump attacked O’Dea on his Truth Social platform for his strategy of distancing himself from the former President. Trump’s comments – which included referring to the GOP nominee as a “RINO,” or Republican in name only – came less than a week after the Senate Leadership Fund gave $1.25 million to a pro-O’Dea super PAC and told local media it thinks Bennet is “vulnerable.”

Big time RINO who McConnell and Romney and other Trump haters are endorsing. Fox News can’t get enough of him.

I’m not understanding the strategy behind O’Dea being so publicly, strongly anti-Trump.

“I’m my own man” translates to “I represent my own interests in Congress. Not the People’s.”

Welllllll...yes. There’s that. But don’t forget things like if this one senate seat means the Dims get to have the Senate Majority Leader. That’s something to think about before voting for the Dim over the almost Dim.

Zackly. Best thing that could be said about him. We’re lucky he’s showing his inner McCain before the election.

<< “Another Biden, Trump election will tear this country apart.” >>

It’s far more likely to be another Trump vs Hillary election. With the same end result.

I can’t help it. I just love Donald Trump.

He calls em as he sees em, and it drives his enemies NUTS!

He and I have the same enemies.

It’s unfortunate for Joe O’Dea and the GOP that he is such a #NeverTrumper. Joe has an interesting back story as an adopted son of a policeman, who left college in his senior year in order start working in his chosen field. Joe formed his own construction company.

It’s always good to hear of a self made business success (i.e. Pillowman) but if O’Dea is dead set on not supporting any of Trump’s policies, perhaps the party can do without him. If he wins this Senate election, he will be one of those we have to work around vs work with.

These elections should be focused on Joe Biden’s failures – supercharged inflation, a broken border, rampant crime, a war on American energy – not a rehash of 2020.

And if it wasn't for the steal of 2020, we wouldn't have these issues.

That's like saying, "My jaw is getting wired shut, I can only drink liquids, but let's not focus on the punch to the face I got last week. Let's move forward".

Fighting with Trump in Colorado probably gives him cred among the lefties there. I take not that Trump didn’t hit him very hard. He basically told him to focus on the issues and that MAGA voters won’t support Trump bathers. This get his name in the news but if he goes to this well again I think MAGA turns hard against him. If he leaves it at this he might be fine.

“I’m not understanding the strategy behind O’Dea being so publicly, strongly anti-Trump.”

Because O’Dea is a Democrat. He infiltrated the Republican party and now he’s in a position to throw the election to his fellow Democrat, senator Michael Bennet.

Paul Ryan and his colleagues in the house did the same thing when Trump was elected president. They could have kept the house but they opted to retire and hand it over to the Democrats.

He’d be better off if he had said, “I will represent my constituents’ interests and none other.” But he said he’s his “own man.” He’ll represent his constituents only if it suits him.
