Biden kicks off student loan relief application season

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday officially kicked off the application process for his student debt cancellation program and announced that 8 million borrowers had already applied for loan relief during the federal government’s soft launch period over the weekend.

He encouraged the tens of millions eligible for potential relief to visit studentaid.gov and touted the application form that the president said would take less than five minutes to complete. An early, “beta launch” version of the online form released late Friday handled the early stream of applications “without a glitch or any difficulty,” Biden said.

“It means more than 8 million Americans are — starting this week — on their way to receiving life-changing relief,” Biden, accompanied by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, said. The president called his program a “game-changer” for millions of Americans saddled with student loan debt.

“My commitment was if elected president, I was going to make government work to deliver for the people,” Biden said. “This rollout keeps that commitment.”

He also took aim at Republican officials who have either criticized the plan or are working in court to defeat it.

“Their outrage is wrong and it’s hypocritical,” Biden said. “I will never apologize for helping working Americans and middle class people as they recover from the pandemic.

The Biden administration has touted it as a “simple, straightforward” application. It asks for the borrower’s name, Social Security number, contact information and date of birth. It does not require income information but asks users to check a box attesting that they are eligible under the program’s income limits.

That information will be checked against Education Department records to help identify applicants who are likely to exceed the income limits, the administration says. Those people will be asked for more information to prove their incomes.

Student loan forgiveness season kickoff coincides with Student College Tuition hike season. A real puzzler there.....

The 10K/20K relief is the distraction. The real debt changer is the rules that decrease the amount of discretionary income, change the percentage to 5% and waive any interest in excess of the required payment.

I paid off my student loan about forty years ago. Can I get a refund?

What about those lawsuits to stop Biden?

If the lawsuits prevail, will the students' loan forgiveness be reversed?

“It means more than 8 million Americans are — starting this week — on their way to receiving life-changing relief,”

More importantly...”It means that over 150 million Americans are — starting this week — on their way to paying for deadbeats who don’t honor their contractual commitments, earned useless ‘studies,’ ‘CRT’ and ‘intersectionality’ degrees” and are on their way to work at McDonalds and Starbucks.

I should think that if the lawsuits enjoin the Bidet Regime, the money forgiven will get nullified, resulting in a big mess. Watching the 2020 Big Steal get certified, a pattern emerges of the ruling class elite doing clearly illegal things without regard to any consequences, or the chance the courts reverse their actions. Viewing this as just so much election year politics to buy votes may be correct. After election day, the courts will strike it all down, and the Bidet Regime and the Dems will just shrug and say we tried. By then the U.S. Dept. of Ed. will have updated data on all of those in default to try to collect more money. Those affected should proceed cautiously giving the government more personal info, and consolidating it, than the government already has.

Isn’t this going to be challenged in court?

Same here, an entire $1,500. I worked my ass off to pay for college. I repaid the loan in my first year out of college. I also had a real major, none of the “studies” bull crap, so it was easy to pay off. But now it would be nice to have $1,500 to pay for heat this winter. I didn’t do anything to cause inflation.

I think the transfer has to actually start before it can be challenged.

I suspect the challengers are prepped for this.

I was in a similar situation. My student loan was not that large, as I went to school on the GI Bill and also worked to pay for my college education.

I think those additional “plans” will go through the normal negotiated rule making process. They can be stopped. Hopefully courts will stop the “mass relief” too soon but time is wasting….it violates new Supreme Court “major issues” standards/doctrines.

Biden has no power, no authority to forgive student debt, even Pelosi said that, so why is this still happening?

same tactic as DACA

enact clearly illegal executive action, implement it... fight it in the courts for years meanwhile it gets entrenched by the corrupt media
