Ross Douthat: The contradictions of climate activism
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | October 17, 2022 | By Ross Douthat | The New York Times

Posted on 10/17/2022 12:42:05 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Climate activists imagine a world in which all the burden falls on the rich.

On Friday morning, two young women approached Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers,” on display in the National Gallery in London, and hurled tomato soup across the blooms, before gluing themselves to the gallery wall.

The two activists were part of a climate-protest outfit with an illuminating name: Just Stop Oil. Celebrating their vandalism, the group declared that the “disruption is in response to the government’s inaction on both the cost of living crisis and the climate crisis,” and that it was deliberately timed to protest both the “launch of a new round of oil and gas licensing” and “an energy price hike” that threatens to throw “almost 8 million households” into “fuel poverty.”

It’s a mistake to demand perfect consistency from activists, but if you read the preceding paragraph carefully you will note a certain tension. The activists are protesting both the expansion of energy supply, on the grounds that fossil fuels are pushing the world toward climate apocalypse, and the energy supply’s constriction, on the grounds that higher prices are cruel to struggling households.

This tension has always lurked beneath the surface of left-wing climate activism, whose vision often imagines rich societies accepting a certain austerity, a retreat from the growth mentality of capitalism, a simpler, more ecologically wholesome way of life … while also imagining that somehow this austerity will fall only on the greedy rich and consumerist upper-middle class, while the poor and working class experience the post-capitalist, de-growth future as more affordable, not less.

Leftists are going to protest no matter what. We are living in the richest culture that has ever existed. Compared with even the first half of the twentieth century today is paradise. Yet leftists sip their latte’s and shout Marxist theory’s on their iPads. Irony is lost on them.

This does nothing to deal with the fact that winter is cold and people will die if they do not have a way to heat their homes. Demand for energy is inelastic. The kind of solution that is the most effective for these dumb children’s “problem” would be a reduction in the human population of the earth (particularly the northern hemisphere). This would reduce demand, as there is no effective substitute for fossil fuels. I don’t see any of these people volunteering themselves for the option of sterilization or euthanasia.

This is an infantile argument, and these brats need put in jail for a long time for the havoc and vandalism they cause. I’m tired of these elitest and juvenile claims that are nothing more than a Marie Antoinette “Let them eat cake” response to energy.

The Energy Crisis is the result of STUPID Biden Policies.

Douthat's attempt to blame Putin is IGNORANT and self deluding.

Putin only has the leverage that STUPID Biden Policies gifted him.

Perhaps Ross could tell us which of the Trump Energy Policies would not have averted the Biden FAILURES?

Good idea. With a coating of plaster of Paris followed by a splash of tomato soup.

I think they only glued one hand to the wall I’d have liked to helped them by gluing the other hand to the wall too, and maybe their faces too.

Throwing tomato juice on a Van Gogh is certainly an excellent way to build sympathy for your cause. Yep. Sure. You bet.

F***ing idiots.

I have been bothered by the contradiction between Climate Change and Global Warming.

Climate Change (CC) explains EXTREEMLY cold winters. Global Warming (GW) predicts warm winters. How can this be the case if CC and GW are the same theory? If they are two different theories, how can anyone believe both?

Ross Douthat— The NY Slimes’s current pet “conservative.” After the legendary Bill Safire, a couple others, then David Brooks, now the latest in a long line of dancing bears on short leashes at the Old Grey Whore.
