Rolling Stone: Trump Used Secret Service Protection to Scam Taxpayers
Rolling Stone ^ | 10/17/2022

Donald Trump charged the Secret Service as much as five times the typical government rate to stay at his properties, records obtained by the House Oversight Committee reveal. The development is only the latest example of the former president using the office to enrich himself.

“The exorbitant rates charged to the Secret Service and agents’ frequent stays at Trump-owned properties raise significant concerns about the former President’s self-dealing and may have resulted in a taxpayer-funded windfall for former President Trump’s struggling businesses,” Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) wrote to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

The committee obtained records showing the Trump Organization overcharged the Secret Service to stay at Trump properties on at least 40 occasions, including once instance in which they charged the agency $1,185 per night to protect Donald Trump Jr. when the government rate was $201.

The Trump Organization charged the Secret Service at total of $1.4 million to accommodate agents protecting the president and his family, which means $1.4 million in taxpayer money went directly to the president’s private company. Trump visited his properties constantly while in office, including making 145 trips to Mar-a-Lago — the Palm Beach, Florida, estate where he hoarded hundreds of classified documents after leaving the White House.

“Given the long-standing concerns surrounding the former President’s conflicts of interest and efforts to profit off the presidency, the committee has a strong interest in obtaining a complete accounting of federal government spending at Trump properties,” Maloney continued

Like many companies,‘I suspect that government employees have a cap price on lodging with exceptions.

I also suspect that secret service does not have the same cap when they are with a protectee.

This is nothing.

I subscribed to RS back in the late 70’s, before I was “political.” Had it for about a year and dropped it. The reason: every album review - and I mean every album review for every monthly issue - the reviewer did nothing but trash the album and the artist. It was too damn depressing.

Another Anti-Trump hit piece. So what? Trump kept us out of War—Biden is staggering us into one that may end everything. If we fight Russia—who else will join the war on Russia’s side? CHINA!, NORTH KOREA, INDIA! SOUTH AFRICA? SYRIA? IRAN? Maybe CUBA? War is BAD! Who will help us besides the UK?

Since Trump turned back his paychecks for 4 years, plus lost a BILLION or two during his term, I don’t care how much he charged them.

Why can’t someone from the Trump administration (whoever is still out of jail) counter this with some basic facts, if the reporting is wrong? I am hoping they can do it quickly.

I'm a huge music fan and during the 1970s, I also subscribed to RS, as well as CREEM (remember that) and others.

It took me a little longer than you but I also grew disenfranchised with these high-hatting and self-important music critics that seemed to trash every album I loved while praising to the high heavens obscure albums that I tried to appreciate but rarely came around to.

Case in point: In the early 1980s, some Hüsker Dü or Pixies album would get far higher ratings than the truly significant works of the day. These rock critics were just being contrarians in an effort to be the hippest cats on the block.

If anybody remembers the "Almost Famous" movie, they nailed this kind of rock critic with the Lester Bangs character.

This kind of holier-than-thou pretentiousness continues today with websites like Pitchfork.

Eventually I learned to just be my own critic instead of trying to be cooler than everybody else. If I get emotionally moved by a Coldplay or a War On Drugs album, I don't need to be embarrassed about it. I like what I like and to hell with everybody else's self-important opinion of it.

This story is not going to change anyone’s mind. They can continue attacks on Trump and it only makes Trump stronger.

Rolling Stone. Back in the 80s, I could stomach half of it. Had not seen one in probably 20 years. Was getting my haircut a few months back, and at the bottom of a stack of magazines was this tiny little Rolling Stone. Didn’t realize they had changed their size, it looked so pathetic. Inside was nothing but garbage - trans this and that, artists that no one has heard of or cares about, and way more political talk than ever ventured into the magazine back in the day. Most people under 30 have probably never touched a Rolling Stone.

I can remember the articles about the Clintons and what they charge(d) taxpayers for SS to live on their property in order to protect them. It was outrageous.

Don’t forget the scam the Clintons pulled, and continue to pull with regard to the SS at their NY estate.
