Climate activists have thrown tins of what appears to be tomato soup over a Van Gogh painting of sunflowers at the National Gallery in London.
Footage showed two people in Just Stop Oil T-shirts opening tins and throwing the contents on the masterpiece before gluing their hands to the wall.
The Metropolitan Police said two people had been arrested.
The gallery said the painting was covered by glass and therefore not damaged.
A statement from the Trafalgar Square venue said: "At just after 11am this morning two people entered Room 43 of the National Gallery.
"The pair appeared to glue themselves to the wall adjacent to Van Gogh's Sunflowers (1888). They also threw a red substance - what appears to be tomato soup - over the painting.

Where is that Yoda graphic with the caption “In these, the stupid deep it runs!”
Why didn’t they throw it on a painting that wasn’t covered by glass?
Leave them glued to the wall and let the citizens desperate from energy come have a discussion with the eco-freaks.
I could not care less about art but I don’t appreciate a bunch of sicko, snot-nosed fags destroying priceless relics that do not belong to them. They all need a good ass whipping since their bottom feeding sperm and egg donors never did it.
Or light 'em up. That glue is extremely flammable.
Public pillories need to make a comeback. There are a lot of bad people who need to made available so that normal people can express their outrage.
Cut their clothes off and leave them there. Put an appropriate title over the display. After that they should be made to scrub the entire museum.
Time to stop Just Stop Oil. Whatever it takes.
Wooden shampoos need a comeback.
Lesser criminal charges?
I didn’t know Sunflowersaurs existed?
It would take one vigilante throwing haymakers at protesters who can only defend themselves with one hand, to make them rethink the gluing strategy.
“Why didn’t they throw it on a painting that wasn’t covered by glass?”
I don’t expect these two were the cleverest kids in school.
Van Gogh was your typical lefty eccentric, but his paintings for the most part ARE very good, and are iconic examples in this genre. They are often surreal, but they do suggest the essence of reality, unlike what passes for modern “art” today. You know what you are looking at.
Sunflowers is one of my favorite.
The National Gallery is awesome. Visited it back in 2000. I would have thought there would be better security these days.
I have mixed feelings on this since it was a Van Gogh painting. Never could see his art as anything valuable.
Close down the gallery, shut out the lights, lock the doors, and leave them glued there for a day, maybe two or three. They’ll be crying like the little spoiled, privileged, whiny snots they are.....just too damned big for their breeches.
Tomato soup? Bah. I would have gone with a clam chowder.
But New England, or Manhattan? New England is pretty common. When I come across a Manhattan style I usually give it a go. Much harder to find.
Gluing hands to the wall could be the modern pillory. Just leave them there, and let people pour tomato soup (or whatever else) on them.
