"If you think teachers’ unions were discouraged to learn that nearly two-thirds of American adults hold an unfavorable view of Critical Race Theory (CRT) or that their own outspoken advocacy of the curriculum has proved to be political Kryptonite, you’re either overestimating their concern for what anyone else believes or underestimating their determination to turn schools into liberal indoctrination centers." https://www.realclearpolicy.com/articles/2022/10/11/race-baiting_crt_still_high_on_teachers_unions_to-do_list_858228.html

I have a better idea.
Teach English, Math, Sciences, a trade and/or computers, and History. (real History, not Louis Farrakhan history)
Mandatory physical fitness as well. It’s bad when I’m in better shape than 85% of high school students.

Anyone who sends their child to any public school for any reason is an abject anti- American moron.

Anyone sending their children to public school should be investigated for child abuse.

Liberals aren’t racists, they only hate people of certain specific races, as long as it is politically OK amongst themselves to hate them.

Yep. I taught for decades in an urban public high school. Well, about 15 years ago the central administrators decided that American History was to be an optional course, and could be replaced by either World History or African History.

Most of the history teachers were very upset by this. How can you live in a country and not know its history? No matter. It was a done deal.

By the way, the (very liberal) teachers unions have nothing to do with this. They can huff and puff all they want. But curriculum decisions are decided at the state and at the school board level. In my experience, union input is neither asked for nor wanted.

Public sector unions should be outlawed.

I wonder with school boards being taken over by MAGA folks is it possible, or even legal, to simply let union contracts expire? No new negotiations. No new union contracts.

Education would improve tremendously if teachers were hired at will and given pay increases based on performance. (I don’t want to hear any leftist drivel about you can’t gauge teacher performance. If you know they are doing poorly, you can know when they do a good job.)

I wonder how the US fares against the world testing-wise if you just took white and Asian test scores.
The Bell Curve is real.
Also real is the cultural effects of discounting the importance of education.
One isn’t likely to make the NFL, NBA or become a successful rapper.
It’s far more likely to become a plumber, electrician, HVAC, Lineman, etc.
Tons of work and something to be proud of.

Yes, let’s cower in our homes and cede the public schools to the liberals. Surely allowing them to indoctrinate the majority of voters unopposed won’t have any negative consequences.

Brilliant! (and cowardly, too)

All the Left does is focus on splintering any cohesive
inclinations we have as citizens.

It is for the realization of their dreams, to install
Communism so it can be tried the right way.

As if...

Yes, indeed. My urban school district had an excellent trades program in the high schools. It was all ruined by George W. Bush’s insane No Child Left Behind. NCLB tested for math and English, but not for the trades. And woe to any school that scored low on those tests.

So every last high school in my district eliminated their trades programs, and shoved the trades students into advanced math and English classes. It was a disaster.

I have mentioned this on other threads. So sorry for the repetition. It’s just something that angers me to this day.

Why the need for school? There is 24/7/365 history exposure. This calendar kind of illustrates the real picture. Easy to note the glaring exceptions.

Nothing wrong with repeating important truths, and I don’t know if I was on them. Someone newer will read that for the first time.

GWB signed it and approved of NCLB, but don’t forget that it was really the work of the ‘Lion of the Senate’, Ted Kennedy. One of many messes he left for us to try and clean up.

For those not familiar, NCLB was based on the insane idea that every child could become ‘proficient’ in reading and math if only enough pressure was put on the schools and the teachers.

It was phased in. The first year something like 23% had to score ‘proficient’. But there was a catch. Every possible group had to score that high for the school to get a passing grade. Possible groups included blacks, whites, Latinos, Pacific Islanders, Indians, etc. etc., boys, girls, limited English speakers, Special Ed kids, free and reduced lunch kids, ‘at-risk kids and more. For a district to pass, every school in the district had to pass as well.

Every third year, the number who had to pass was ratcheted up considerably. So every third years schools had to concentrate on ‘teaching to the test’ even more. Some states lowered standards and many school started to cheat. The end goal was as the Acts name stated: 100% of students would score ‘proficient’. This, of course was impossible. So after a dozen years or so, NCLB was abandoned to be replaced in most places with ‘common core’.
