If you thought Joe Biden’s attempt to jawbone gasoline station owners into lowering prices was stupid, make way for the king of dunces, California Governor Gavin Newsom. Californians pay the highest prices for gasoline in the country, well over $6 a gallon almost everywhere. Even Hawaii with no oil production, totally dependent on oil shipped in, now has cheaper gasoline than California.
Governor Gavin Newsom is on the ballot for re-election and wants to be taken seriously as a 2024 residential contender, so he evidently feels the need to address his constituents’ highest-in-the-nation level of pain at the pump. But his response in a tweet last Friday is stunningly ignorant:
NEW: I'm calling for a Special Session to address the greed of oil companies. Gas prices are too high. Time to enact a windfall profits tax directly on oil companies that are ripping you off at the pump.

Ahem, it is the State of California that is responsible for its drivers paying the highest prices, as The Pacific Research Institute explains:
California has the highest motor fuel taxes in the country – 67 cents a gallon, says the Tax Foundation, using American Petroleum Institute data. Second highest are in Illinois, 60 cents a gallon. The national median is about 30 cents a gallon. Due to “big-government energy policies,” California drivers pay a 37% premium for gasoline compared to the national average. Backing off these mandates would have saved drivers $9.6 billion in 2020 over 2019.
California imposes unique requirements on gasoline formulation, and these change with the seasons, requiring refineries to temporarily shut down to make the transition. Gasoline cannot be imported from other states to make up the difference, so that construction in supply drives up prices to the point where some drivers stop using so much gasoline,

Like putting out fire, with gasoline.
He has to take before he can give.
I think that’s a Democrat rule.
Announcing the ban on gasoline vehicles was a pretty good start of showing how stupid you are. What did he think was going to happen ?
“Second highest are in Illinois, 60 cents a gallon”
Oh, I have totally stopped buying any petroleum in the sick [Ill] State.
I think Gruesome is suggesting the Samson solution be used.
ESAD prune pickers. You deserve what you vote for.
“People are suffering?? That’s terrible!!! I know — we’ll just move more of their power and money to the government!!” — Democrap politician
The DemoMarxists never ever ever take responsibility for anything they do, it’s always the fault of someone else.
Profits tax on oil companies is one step closer to nationalizing them - California = Venezuela 2.0
Newsom's constituents are supremely stupid. They're Californians. They're liberals. And there is no creature on earth any more obtuse and willfully stupid than a liberal from California.
I.e., his constituents will applaud him as a hero.
How about the ones who voted against it?
Who do you mean, the 4,742,825 who voted for his opponent? The recognition that there are good people here, never giving up the fight and regularly getting our brains bashed in in elections, would ruin a snappy one-liner. Though in this case it’s not even snappy: “prune pickers?” Really? I’ve lived in CA all my life- fourth generation Californian. Yet I have no idea what the reference is to.
When in doubt, engage operation demagogue.
They should pull out of California. If you don’t do business in the state, you can’t be taxed by the state (as far as I know).
Ted Kennedy had the same idiotic idea in 1980. Reagan got elected and prices stabilized. Gas lines went away.
cant fix stupid but stupid can elect and re-elect them.
Now I’ll have that David Bowie song running through my head all day, thank you.
(No, really, thank you. It’s replacing “Mamba #5”, which has been stuck in my head for a week now!)
I like the original “Cat People” version than the “Let’s Dance” version.
It was also used in “Inglourious Basterds”.
