Hobbs, who played an active student body role as a member of the yearbook staff and student council for part of her tenure, went to school there from 1984 through 1988.
The tradition entails freshman students performing tasks for senior class ‘masters’ that included performing ‘embarrassing acts of servitude.’
One example from the 1985 yearbook, which would have been the end of Hobbs’ freshman year, describes ‘slaves’ in her grade ‘wearing unbecoming hairdoes and unbecoming outfits, sporting embarrassing signs and performing embarrassing acts of servitude for senior masters for a day.’
It’s not clear if Hobbs participated herself in the ‘auctions,’ but her 1987 Student Council page credits her and the other student leaders for having ‘coordinated the many class events during Spirit Week’ - when Slave Day appears to have been celebrated.
She would have likely known the tradition was celebrated and regularly featured in the Seton Catholic Prep yearbook when she joined its staff in 1987.
The 1987 yearbook mentions ‘Slave Day’ four times.
Events from over 35 years ago. let me know if she was wearing blackface or a KKK outfit in the last 10.
My Jr. High had a slave day in the 70’s. It was in PE class.
It was weird. They ended it the next year.
We had a “slave day” tradition at our Catholic school
Only it was called “detention” and it involved nuns assigning chores to boys who misbehaved, unpaid tasks such as weeding flower-beds, mopping floors, or moving furniture
Or course I prefer Lake, but this is ridiculous.
I despise Hobbs, but this is nothing.
We had “slave day” at my high school too. They sold off football players for a day to carry your books to class for you, etc.
Our high school held a Slave Day back in the 1960s and 1970s.
Minorities at our school actively participated in it because it raised funds for their clubs.
We had that during spirit week as I remember. Forgot about it. Seniors would get freshmen to do menial tasks for them like carry their books. I recall a specific warning against “personal favors”
We had Freshman Day at my high school.
Seniors drew all over Freshman.
It stopped before I became a Senior.
I wouldn’t have done it anyhow.
Frankly so what.
Sick of wearing straitjackets because everything offends SOMEbody.
It’s the “Daily Mail” so many take their Russia related stories hook, line and sinker so why question this one?
Should we be sensitive to the fact that most black Americans are descendants of slaves? Yes! Where is the line that separates insensitivity from freedom of expression? Our conscience, and for Christians, the Holy Spirit speaking to our heart, helps answer this question. Just because we have the right to say/do something doesn't mean we should exercise that right.
Most blacks and current Hollywood culture will reference whites in derogatory or less than complimentary terms as we hear in music, screenplay, news etc.
If we're going to respect one another, it would be wise for every person to apply this teaching: "Do unto others, as we would have them do to us."
My high school did that back in the 1960’s. Boys were slaves for girls and girls for boys. I got to carry books for a cheerleader.
Hobbs is a social worker and a baby killing Catholic. Just what Arizona needs...a social worker Gov.
Hobbs has been found being racists with employees 2 separate times while in office.
Regardless, just listen to this idiot for 5 minutes. She is a total moron with no substance to anything she says and sounds like mini mouse. I dont think she could lead her way out of a paper bag. She has no business holding any government position. She might qualify as a checker at the grocery store.
What a cunning stunt.
This is one of the dumbest stories I’ve seen in ages. I you are talking about what some clown did in HS, you might as well hang it up.
