We had a “slave day” tradition at our Catholic school

Only it was called “detention” and it involved nuns assigning chores to boys who misbehaved, unpaid tasks such as weeding flower-beds, mopping floors, or moving furniture

Japanese kids do those chores every day after lunch. It isn’t for misbehavior, it is just expected.
