Putin cannot lose this war and remain in power. So I expect things to escalate sharply in the near term. If Ukraine withstands this escalation, the regime will collapse. But they have to get through the near term escalation to get through to the other side. I think they’ll do it.
I don’t expect a new northern front to be effective if it happens at all. It’s main importance is as a threat to keep Ukrainian forces tied down in the north and away from the south and east.
No, the US won’t use nukes under any circumstance. But a nuclear shot by Russia will almost certainly bring NATO air forces into the fight.
Russia knows this, which gives them a dilemma. If they don’t use nukes, they lose. If they do use them, they lose. They are in a box with no clear way out.
