Orthodox Jews sue New York over gun law banning concealed carry in houses of worship

A group of Orthodox Jews in New York City are suing the state’s new law banning carrying a firearm in a house of worship and arguing that it essentially makes them "sitting ducks."

The Jewish congregation in Midwood, Brooklyn, in a suit organized by the New York State Jewish Gun Club in Rockland County, filed the lawsuit on September 29 objecting to the state’s Concealed Carry Improvement Act signed by New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, the New York Post reported.

The legislation banned concealed-carry permit holders from carrying weapons into "sensitive locations" that includes "places of worship or religious observation" which the lawsuit alleges puts Jewish synagogue-goers at risk.

"You are making them sitting ducks," Ameer Benno, a lawyer representing the group, told the outlet. "It’s not a myth that Jewish houses of worship are targets for hate."

"I’m proud to represent the plaintiffs in this case. @KathyHochul’s law is blatantly unconstitutional," Benno said on Twitter. "And her contempt for fundamental rights & religious freedom cannot stand!"

The lawsuit contends that taking away the ability for worshippers in synagogues to defend themselves prevents Jewish people from freely practicing their religion due to safety concerns and states that the law’s language of what constitutes a religious observation site is vague.

And to think, 250 years ago citizens were required to bring their “fire locks” to church, and have militia drills after services.

The same could be said of any gun-free zone.

Sounds like "sensitive locations" include locations where law-abiding citizen concealed carry is needed most.

And I'd give a week's salary to see caught on video a tallit-clad congregation member surprise a would-be terrorist with a quicker draw.

Because no crazy religious zealot would kill people in the house of God...

Good for them, although I would say Orthodox Jews are more at risk of being targeted.

They SHOULD get support from all Jews, but they won't.

Doesn’t living in NYC make a person a sitting duck to begin with?

In other words, liberal state of NY is putting Jews’ lives at risk.

Can’t say I recall the last time an Orthodox Jew was involved in a mass shooting or an armed robbery, but I guess the left has gotta make it easy for the antisemites who have been attacking Jews all year in that city.

Most New Yawk politicians would prefer that the Jews are “sitting ducks.”

Govt. overreach inside houses of worship. Lids want it both ways it seems. I’m glad they filed suit. The SCOTUS will side with them!!!

That’s true for Christian houses of worship, too.

The Jews on FR seem pretty hard core conservative. I’d take them as neighbors.

On this topic, I remember a long thread in the religion section with Jews discussing how to permit the carrying of weapons on Saturday. It was pretty fascinating to an outsider.

Yep. All the solid churches (and apparently synagogues) attract weirdos.

My wife (who is Apache and borders on a tad superstitious, but dang if she isn’t often right) claims it’s demons trying to stop the spread of Gods Word.

Religious Jews vote conservative en masse.

They should be backing Lee Zeldin and not
Madame Ho Hochul. Zeldin is 2 points behind
and is getting little GOP funding, He could
be the next George Pataki who served 3 terms.

The Libertarian candidate has 3 percent of the
vote and no chance of winning, Mr. Sharpe should
drop out and support endorse Zeldin.
New York crime is up 30 percent and Madame Ho
will increase taxes and fees.

Gop should pay for campaigns this close.

Jews on FR....

Not as a promotion of this but I’m glad they’re around:

Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of gun rights in the United States and to encourage Americans to understand, uphold, and defend “all of the Bill of Rights for all Citizens.” The group was founded by U.S. Navy veteran, former FFL dealer, and author Aaron S. Zelman in 1989. It recognizes the Second Amendment as protecting a pre-existing natural law right of individuals to keep and bear arms. It is based in Bellevue, Washington. (excerpt from Wikipedia)
