The US let "the genie out of the bottle" in 1945. And "repercussions" would not necessarily include a massive nuclear response from a third party state, unless that state is willing to risk national suicide.
No nation would ever trust that one tactical hypersonic nuclear missile would be a one time deal? There would have to be a retaliation by someone and that nation would have to let the whole arsenal fly. If not that day, then within weeks or even days.
You seem to be suggesting that if one tactical nuke lands somewhere in Ukraine, "[t]here would have to be a retaliation by someone [outside Ukraine] and that nation would have to let the whole arsenal fly." Why, precisely? Treaty obligations? Vital national interests? Moral superiority?
And which country do you think would volunteer for a Russian nuclear response? Britain? France? China? What country would be sufficiently stupid & suicidal "to let the whole arsenal fly" over some location in Ukraine? The world wonders.
That is how an escalation works. A tactical hypersonic nuclear missile is an escalation from conventional weapons. In war there is always an escalation. It's a matter of trust. As in, nobody can afford to trust the enemy when considering nuclear war.
It was not my understanding that the United States is currently at war with Russia. There certainly has been no declaration of war by Congress, or Russian attack on US territory or US personnel (or even "vital US interests", as far as I have heard ;>). If we are in fact at war with Russia, it must be a result of some "semi-fascist" decision made by the senile occupant of the White House, no doubt supported by his equally mindless followers...
Those Russian nukes, for all we know, could already be here.
The southern border has been wide open; if millions of people and tons of drugs can enter the US, an enemy with nukes could have already brought them into the US.
Hiding them, storing them. Just waiting for the moment to park them next to their targets.
A proxy war is a war. Biden has pledged our full support. Russia knows we have pledged to send weapons systems to Zelensky. If President Putin feels the need to stop those weapons systems from getting to Ukraine he knows who to go after.
