Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is expected to retire from his seat in the Senate by the end of the year in order to become the president of the University of Florida.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Sasse said he had been courted by “wonderful institutions” previously, but felt that the University of Florida was unique.
“UF is the most important institution in the nation’s most economically dynamic state. Washington partisanship isn’t going to solve these workforce challenges — new institutions and entrepreneurial communities are going to have to spearhead this work. If UF wants to go big, I’m excited about the wide range of opportunities.”
A source familiar with the situation told The Hill that the Nebraska Republican will likely step down from the upper chamber between mid-November and mid-December, with Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) set to tap his successor.
The governor can fill the seat through 2024. Sasse’s term would’ve lasted through 2026.

And another one bites the dust...
Timing is very interesting.
Afraid of a MAGA primary challenge in 2026?
The guy is no good and he is probably time this to try and reduce the republican count in the senate when the next session starts.
No that’s funny. Even if he was scared, 2026 is a lifetime from now. I just think he hates being in the minority of the Senate. They don’t get to do anything.
University of Florida...how far they have fallen. :-(
Must be some juicy pics/videos coming out.
Life as a squishy moderate is getting more difficult. The Dems have gone so far off the deep end, there are not many deals he can cut. Being a University President will be far more interesting and personally fulfilling.
I’m a Gator. I think I’m gonna puke.
We finally get a good coach after a trio of dunces and now we get saddled with this bucket of shit as the school president?
sick.
The governor is a Republican, but he’s a wealthy country-club Republican. His family owns the Chicago Cubs. I wonder what kind of senator he’ll appoint. We might wind up missing Sasse.
Very true. Plus I’m sure he made a nice stock portfolio while in the Senate so now he can go do some thing more desirable.
This could turn out very well. Our governor, Pete Ricketts, is out in January due to term limits. If he could appoint himself to this Senate seat, he could serve the first 4 years without running. Praying this is how it happens.
That’s a win!
“ On February 13, 2021, Sasse was one of seven Republican senators to vote to convict Donald Trump of incitement of insurrection in his second impeachment trial.” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Sasse
“ When a vacancy occurs in the representation of the State of Nebraska in the Senate of the United States, the office shall be filled by the Governor. ” - https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=32-565
John Peter Ricketts (R) is serving as the 40th governor of Nebraska since 2015
“ Ricketts criticized the impeachment of Donald Trump over his request that Ukraine start an investigation into his political rival Joe Biden. Ricketts said the impeachment proceedings were a “partisan impeachment parade” and praised the Senate for acquitting Trump.” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Ricketts
THIS IS A BIG WIN FOR TRUMP, AND FOR AMERICA!
They don’t do anything when in the majority either. They just help their so called opposition to move forward their agenda.
“ …governors have often floated the idea of appointing themselves to the senate, but this hasn’t actually happened since 1977 when Walter Mondale’s (D-MN) elevation to vice president left his Senate seat open and governor Wendell Anderson appointed himself to Mondale’s seat. There’s a good reason it hasn’t happened since then. In 1978 when Anderson went to face voters, they didn’t take kindly to his antics he was crushed by 16 points while dragging down every other statewide elected Democrat too. The loss was so severe that it was soon dubbed the “Minnesota Massacre.” In fact, the last seven governors to try this trick were all defeated in their first election, with two not even making it past their own party’s primary.”

The appointed Senator will face election in ‘24 for two years, then again for a full term in ‘26.
Thanks for these details. I would still like to see Ricketts in that seat, if it can be made to work.
Someone must have something on Sasse. I’d like to think Trump is playing hardball behind the scenes.
