The Russians have a long history in battle of giving up ground but preserving their men and equipment.
The vastly superior Roman Army at Cannae attacked Hannibal and the Carthaginians. Hannibal then sprung a trap of encirclement and annihilated the much larger force.
The English at Agincourt faced a large force of mounted French nobles in armor. The English were sick and exhausted but they had “air superiority.” They had a large contingent of long bowmen who launched huge volleys of arrows at the French. The mounted nobles charged their horses but the fields were so muddy, the horses could not be controlled. The nobles fell from their horses, shackled in the fight by their heavy armor. Once dismounted, they were helpless.
The English prevailed and took their time that day, killing almost the entirety of French nobility.
