Frequent Breaks in Undersea Pipelines Mean Fixes Are Possible for Nord Stream
Scientific America ^ | October 5, 2022 | Lars Fischer

While international experts try to figure out what caused the ruptures in the Nord Stream pipeline, engineers have multiple options to try and fix it…

… Pipelines must resist many threats. The massive anchors of large container ships or tankers in particular can damage the pipes—as happened in 2008 with the Kvitebjørn pipeline in the North Sea off the Norwegian coast.…

… Nord Stream’s more than 1,000 kilometers of pipelines. The structures lie directly on the seabed or, where it is not stable or level enough, on a bed of gravel. They are only laid under the ground where they run nearest to the shore. The pipelines are protected by their 2.7- to 4.1-centimeter-thick steel walls and a concrete jacket up to 11 centimeters thick, which also serves as additional weighting.…

…Even the possibility of an explosion near the pipelines was taken into account in the planning of Nord Stream…. …Thus, according to the operator, the pipes were designed survive a blast of two tons of explosives located 12 meters from the pipeline without leaking.

Despite these precautions, something has breached the Nord Stream pipeline, although it is difficult to estimate the extent of the current damage.… So far, the indications—for example, the size of the gas leak—suggest that the massive pipes are very badly damaged or even completely severed. The extent of the destruction will determine how the pipeline must be repaired….

… Once the pipeline itself has been repaired, it is necessary to pump out the water that has penetrated the tube, dry the inside with an air stream and, if necessary, renew the corrosion protection. At Nord Stream, this consists of a plastic coating and so-called sacrificial anodes, made of zinc and aluminum, which prevent electrochemical corrosion.

See the linked article for lots of information (beyond the limited amount that I could extract) on repairs of severely damaged underseas pipelines. Such repairs have been successfully undertaken at greater depths than would be required at Nord Stream.

Maybe they can extend it to Cuba.

If Poland, Germany, DC, Sweden et al fully cooperate with Russians wanting to make repairs, that will tell us one thing. If they throw up all kinds of roadblocks... that tells us they did it.

I’m estimating the temperatures routinely drop down into the 40s Fahrenheit overnight now in Berlin. Bundle up. Perhaps German birthrates will rebound if couples rediscover some old ways of keeping warm at night.

Stay warm, FRiend.

Germany has energy for the winter and I had the window open all night.
But don’t hesitate to let the Germans know when you need more baby formula.

Wait till the weight coating start falling off and the line starts to float. That’s when the fun starts.

After the war, the Tiergarten (Berlin, Germany) became part of the British Occupation sector of West Berlin. The area however underwent a sudden, violent change; much of the wooded area was felled and turned to firewood due to the shortage of coal, and the now empty fields were turned into temporary farmland by order of British troops. There were around 2,550 plots of land available for growing potatoes and vegetables. However, these two factors caused the once great forest to nearly disappear; only 700 trees survived out of over 200,000 that once lined the parkway, the bodies of water turned silty, every bridge was destroyed, the monuments lay on their sides and were badly damaged. Plans to fill the waterways with debris from the war were also suggested, but were prevented by the head of the Berlin Central Office of Environmental Planning, Reinhold Lingner.

The Intercept

Secret U.S. operations inside Ukraine are being conducted under a presidential covert action finding. Yet clandestine American operations inside Ukraine are now far more extensive than they were early in the war, when U.S. intelligence officials were fearful that Russia would steamroll over the Ukrainian army. There is a much larger presence of both CIA and U.S. special operations personnel and resources in Ukraine than there were at the time of the Russian invasion in February, several current and former intelligence officials told The Intercept.

Secret U.S. operations inside Ukraine are being conducted under a presidential covert action finding, current and former officials said. The finding indicates that the president has quietly notified certain congressional leaders about the administration’s decision to conduct a broad program of clandestine operations inside the country.

One former special forces officer said that Biden amended a preexisting finding, originally approved during the Obama administration, that was designed to counter malign foreign influence activities. A former CIA officer told The Intercept that Biden’s use of the preexisting finding has frustrated some intelligence officials, who believe that U.S. involvement in the Ukraine conflict differs so much from the spirit of the finding that it should merit a new one.

A CIA spokesperson declined to comment about whether there is a presidential covert action finding for operations in Ukraine.

The internet can be funny. I can't get the full article in Firefox, but I was able to get the full article in google Chrome. Maybe changing browsers can help.

From what little I understand, this underwater pipeline work is some seriously hardcore engineering.

For the near term, it s weighted by the seawater inside the pipe.

Long term France will have nearly enough nuclear power for Germany. Such a deal!
