Europe Failed Its First Winter Energy Savings Test
The Washington Post ^ | October 3, 2022 | Javier Blas

If Europe was a school student, last week it sat its first exam in Energy Savings 101. It failed. And that doesn’t bode well for much tougher tests to come in January.

Despite strong imports of liquefied natural gas to replace Russian shipments, Europe needs to reduce gas consumption — by a lot — if it’s going to make it through the winter. Extra supply won’t be enough. Conservation is absolutely paramount.

The exact amount varies from country to country, but on average, the European Commission has suggested a 10%-15% demand reduction. Germany and a few other nations, which in the past relied on Russian gas significantly, need to cut consumption even more, by as much as 20%.

Because these savings targets are fixed, a warmer winter would make conservation a lot easier, a colder one much harder. But irrespective of how harsh the winter gets, Europe needs to consume less gas than it did in 2021 and what it averaged over the last five years.

One would think that they would ramp up their coal mines again.

But NOPE, can not do that.

I wish I knew what those people who laughed at our genius POTUSDJT have to say for themselves now. The Germans have every right to be REALLY pissed at their arrogant leaders.

Want to bet very soon that the Euro nations do something to end that conflict?

If they dont, its going to get real ugly.

Going to be bad enough here.

The new German messiah is out there somewhere. German response to calamity is always the superman.

No reason for them to ever import any wood pellets. Forests a plenty.

American officials are frustrated by Kyiv’s lack of transparency regarding its military and covert plans, especially on Russian soil.

It's their war. We should give them arms but obviously there's a limit somewhere. We need to get the Russians to turn on Putin without getting us nuked.

The Germans burn living trees to provide energy, but burning dead trees aka coal has been tabooed.

Oh, for sure! Their industries are living on borrowed time right now.

“I hope that at some point there will be an end to the crisis, which will bring peace to Europe and, hopefully, will return some of the Russian gas to support Europe. If you look at the situation, it will be very difficult for Europe to withstand zero supplies of Russian gas for more than two winters. Many countries and companies have approached us, and I have consistently said the same thing: “Europe has always depended on Russia as the main supplier through pipelines”... There will be some LNG coming from the US and from other places… But, in the end, this is a small volume compared to the huge volume that comes from Russia,” Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said.

Most of the blame for high energy prices and the complete destruction of the European green policy lies with the governments of the EU countries, Europe cannot do without gas from Russia,” insists Saad al-Kaabi.”

U.S. Aims to Turn Taiwan Into Giant Weapons Depot

Officials say Taiwan needs to become a “porcupine” with enough weapons to hold out if the Chinese military blockades and invades it, even if Washington decides to send troops.

Pellets where I am (Sicily) went from 5 Euros per 15Kg bag to ~15 Euros per bag. Good luck finding them, too since Eastern Europe, who is a big exporter, shut down exports to insure that their folks won't go without.

I heat my top floor with a pellet stove but I caught wind of this "Take THAT Putin!!" lunacy many months ago and planned accordingly - modified my stove to burn crushed olives pits (4 Euros per 15Kg) and bought two small woodstoves as backup. Unlike in Germany, I can drive down to the lake here and get as much free wood as I want. A lot of work though, but it helps me stay in decent shape.

That green wood is going to be hard to get started and be really sooty. Hope their chimney is good and clean.

This is what happens when you follow the rantings of a retarded Swedish teenager who played hooky from school. That Swedish teenager had handlers just like our own President Biden. One particular young German woman was always photographed at her side. There's probably a Pulitzer in it for a reporter to dig through the relationships. 10:1 it'll lead straight back to Davos and from there to Vladimir Putin. The Russians have been running the Greens since the late '70's.
