If Europe was a school student, last week it sat its first exam in Energy Savings 101. It failed. And that doesn’t bode well for much tougher tests to come in January.
Despite strong imports of liquefied natural gas to replace Russian shipments, Europe needs to reduce gas consumption — by a lot — if it’s going to make it through the winter. Extra supply won’t be enough. Conservation is absolutely paramount.
The exact amount varies from country to country, but on average, the European Commission has suggested a 10%-15% demand reduction. Germany and a few other nations, which in the past relied on Russian gas significantly, need to cut consumption even more, by as much as 20%.
Because these savings targets are fixed, a warmer winter would make conservation a lot easier, a colder one much harder. But irrespective of how harsh the winter gets, Europe needs to consume less gas than it did in 2021 and what it averaged over the last five years.

They no sooner reached their storage goals than the have to begin using it. I suspect they will find a way to keep from freezing but it will cost them dearly.
There's a woman on youtube in Austria who updates her situation daily.
She says individuals can go into woods, public and private, to collect mushrooms or berries - but you can collect NO firewood. Even coming out of the forest with a stick is crime.
They will probably be wasteful with gas this fall when the weather is cool. Then when it gets really cold, they'll have to limit their usage and some people will die.
Unless they luck out and somehow end up with a mild winter.
Poland is supposed to have a massive amount of shale gas, the largest reserves in Europe. Over 3 trillion cubic meters. But between the greens, corruption and ineptitude, it stays in the ground. Poland should be profiting massively from the current market.

Well the ultimate conservation effort is the one when they don’t have any at all. Wool futures are a great potential investment.
All the more reason Germany should import wood pellets made in Maine. Eastport, ME has a system to quickly load pellets on to ships.
