SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico health officials are renewing a public order aimed at protecting newborn babies from syphilis.
The state Health Department on Wednesday announced requirements that medical providers follow best practices by testing all pregnant women for syphilis multiple times.
The agency says that New Mexico had the highest rate of congenital syphilis cases among states in 2020, when there were 42 local cases of newborn babies contracting the disease from their mothers. That is the most recent year for finalized federal statistics.
Syphilis is a bacterial disease that surfaces as genital sores but can ultimately lead to severe symptoms and death if left untreated. When a mother passes the infection on to her baby, it can lead to serious birth defects, miscarriage and infant death.
State Health Secretary David Scrase says congenital syphilis is preventable through testing and treatment with penicillin to prevent transmission.

Mothers? Surely they mean birthing persons!
All NM ‘Rats need to be sequestered before the election.
We sure know how to be at the top of every bad list without even trying.
Front holers
Why is the number of cases of syphilis on the rise and why especially in New Mexico?
After this country spent most of the 20th century eliminating or controlling most diseases known to man, at least inside our own borders, we stopped doing that and focused on keeping promiscous homosexuals alive.
And then we started letting every disease known to man walk back across into our borders.
Diversity has proven to be Satan's Strength.
Ever been with a NM girl? Yeah...bet money on this being a good idea.
I want to be careful how I say this.
Is there really a need to test all mothers or all pregnant women?
If a woman is monogamous is she really at high enough risk that we just want to automatically test her?
Sure let’s go ahead and test people who are at risk for a disease. But why the desire to just automatically test everyone in a certain group , when many of those people are at extremely low risk?
But these are of pregnant mothers likely having syphilis and having to be tested. Are you supposing the number of pregnant mothers in NM with syphilis is mostly women from across the border? Or given syphilis from men who had it that are all illegals?
Because actually syphilis IS on the rise across the U.S.

If it makes you feel better, Mississippi is poorer...
“If a woman is monogamous...”
Have you met women today?
Well, in NM a certain demographic is under 3%.
Because if the government says that monogamous mothers dont need testing, it makes the promiscuous mothers feel bad.
My comment was in two parts; one about reducing the risk of disease in this country, and the other about allowing many of those diseases to flourish again through uncontrolled borders. If the 2 parts are related, they would be compounding factors. Each one separately is a disaster.
Human trafficking where women have multiple partners would be my best guess. New Mexico is a border crossing state and it’s not uncommon for female border crossers to have been raped repeatedly on their journey.
Really?
Really?!
You don't think that there might be significant statistical differences between various easily-identifiable demographic groups?
For car insurance, criminality, AIDS, mayonnaise consumption - every conceivable kind of parameter, it is child's play to recognize differences between demographic groups.
But syphilis is somehow "different?"
Political Correctness gone mad!
Regards,
There’s the difference.
