Officials: US to send Ukraine more advanced rocket systems

The U.S. will soon deliver to Ukraine four more of the advanced rocket systems credited with helping the country’s military gain momentum in its war with Russia.

The High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as HIMARS, will be part of a new $625 million package of aid expected to be announced on Tuesday, according to U.S. officials.

The decision marks the first time the U.S. has sent more HIMARS to Ukraine since late July, and it will bring the total number delivered so far to 20. The systems have become a key tool in Ukraine’s ability to strike bridges that Russia has used to supply its troops, enabling Ukrainian forces to make inroads in Russia-controlled regions.

The U.S. in recent weeks also provided funding through a separate program — the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative — so another 18 HIMARS can be purchased through longer-term contracts. USAI funds are being used as part of the effort by the U.S. and Western allies to ensure Ukraine’s forces are trained and equipped to defend their country in the years to come. But those contracts will take several years to fulfill.

The latest aid package is also expected to include other ammunition and equipment for Ukraine’s troops. Several U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details of the package ahead of the announcement. This is the first tranche of U.S. aid delivered in the new fiscal year, which began Oct. 1.

We lend them money in order for them to buy our weapons, and then forgive the debt. Its a great way to lose money and weapons yous see.

Glad to hear it. The HIMARS system has been helpful in throwing the orcs back.

Amazing how a trivial number of such systems have had such a profound effect.

HIMARS and its big brother MLRS are a standard division level asset in US and most Nato divisions, deployed as battalions of 24-36 launchers.

Ukraine also has a few MLRS to pad out the HIMARS. But all in all, it has fewer of these than a single US division.

So the US has NOT delivered these new HIMARS?

Or are you just shooting the messenger?

As the Russians retreat, they must establish new logistical points behind the lines in Russia. Those facilities are legitimate targets and need weapons with adequate range to destroy them

It's the combination of HIMARs and incredible western intelligence that is so devastating. They pinpoint critical Russian positions - headquarters, ammo dumps, vehicle parks, etc. - with satellites and SIGINT, punch in those coordinates, drive HIMARs in range and wham! Then scoot away out of range of any potential Russian counter-battery fire until the next target is located.

The Russians have no effective counter to that. You'd need to be conducting a mobile, fast-paced offensive to get inside Ukraine's OODA loop, but the Russians are long past having that capability. With a static defense, they're just getting chewed up. They ke

Between the weapons abandoned in Afghanistan and those delivered to Ukraine, the black market in arms has never been better.

And the amazing part is how ubiquitous and low tech the system is. The GPS guidance package is the key, and that was first used in action in 2001 (as JDAMs). Putting one on a rocket was trivial.

So simple and yet so wonderfully useful.

So answer this - Why does Western Intelligence feel compelled to provide the critical targeting data to the Ukes? By doing this, isn’t the West actively participating in the day to day fighting? Are you saying the HIMARs are useless without Western Intelligence control? Are the Ukes on the ground “confirming” that the target is clear to engage? I.e. no collateral damage like killing innocent civilians.

This is NO DIFFERENT from a US Airman sitting in a trailer at Creech AFB driving an armed UAV over Syria, Iraq, etc. then taking out a target. That Airman is actively engaged from 7000 miles away. In the case of HIMARs, the Ukes maybe even get to pull the trigger. The West is actively engaged and people call Putin a Madman. Well he is, and SO IS THE WEST.

Why is the West Hell Bent on continuingly Poking the Bear? Could they WANT WWIII?? It appears that to the West, De-escalation is NOT AN OPTION.

Western intelligence is following national policy.

The Russians have always had the option to consider this, and any other sort of assistance to Ukraine, as a casus belli. Sanctions on Russia, finance, non-weapon aid, arms supplies, and this intelligence assistance, can all be taken taken as a casus belli. The sanctions alone are a bigger “poke” than anything else IMHO. One more intervention in military tech is nowhere near as damaging.

But making war over any of these things, or, certainly, all of them, is entirely up to Russia. They can choose to declare war at any time. They have always had such an option.

Note - there is no earthly power that can be called on to judge this case.

HIMARS GPS rockets are useless without the precision mode (US and allied military only) on the US GPS system, and targeting seems to be by US recon satellite that provides GPS coordinates for targets. I suppose its the Ukrainians making the target call. But they would also, probably, be depending on other US intelligence analysis of, say, traffic patterns or signals intelligence,to ID HQs and ammo dumps, etc.

LOL, Former US Marine Corps Intelligence officer Scott Ritter said HIMARS would not change the war’s outcome. “Yes, you may kill more Russians. But that’s it. They will keep all the territory they have captured,” he adds. July 28, 2022

What does that altered USA flag stand for? Isn’t that a desecration of our flag? I see the flag with blue stripe or red stripe denoting support for police and firefighters, but this picture shows half our flag with some other country’s colors. What does it stand for?

We fought Russians in Vietnam and Korea, there is nothing unusual in our aid to Ukraine.
