Brasília (AFP) – President Jair Bolsonaro was not the only one to have a surprisingly strong night in Brazil's elections Sunday: the far-right incumbent's allies also beat expectations in congressional and governor's races.
Political analysts say that means hardline conservatives will be powerful players in the Latin American giant's new political landscape, weakening leftist front-runner Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his Workers' Party (PT), even if he beats Bolsonaro in the October 30 presidential runoff.
Here is a look at some of the big wins for "Bolsonarismo":
Congress Bolsonaro's Liberal Party (PL) is on track to be the largest party in the lower house of Congress, according to analysts.
Its newly elected congressmen include some of Bolsonaro's most controversial allies:
- Ex-environment minister Ricardo Salles won a seat for Sao Paulo. He presided over a surge in destruction in the Amazon rainforest and was forced to resign last year after coming under investigation for involvement in a timber trafficking scheme.
- Ex-health minister Eduardo Pazuello won a seat for Rio de Janeiro. The army general oversaw Brazil's response to Covid-19 during the worst phase of the pandemic, when hundreds of thousands of people died and severe oxygen shortages brought the health system in the northern city of Manaus to the brink of collapse.
- PL candidate Nikolas Ferreira, a 26-year-old social media personality, was the most-voted congressman-elect in the country, winning 1.4 million votes.

Obviously a threat to democracy.
Far Right=Not Marxist
what’s funny was that the polls said Bolsanaro was going to lose..
Not to worry.
Dominion has the Presidential runoff well in hand.
Far right, eh? Must be tired of illegals from Surinam and Uruguay
I need Chile to through the communist leader out. I wanted to retire there.
Job #1: IMPEACH LULA
I’d rather be far-right than far-wrong😁
Convoys of electric Volvos are on their way from Washington, Oregon, Minnesota and Illinois stuffed full of misplaced Brazilian ballots.
Far right? I guess that means anything to the right of left? The further left one is, the further away is the right. So anybody discussing “far right” is automatically very far left. (I’m gonna figger it out yet, then I’m gonna start on transgender and in this case, trans means fake, a good start)
Yes, when conservatives win elections, it’s a “threat to democracy”
“Far Right” = normal people who aren’t communist scumbags.
Sigh...I’m jealous of all those world countries who can run fair elections like we used to. If our country’s elections were honest, conservatives would be able to win here too.
(I never said Brazil was a third world country)
He did better than this far-left French press thought he would.
“Dominion has the Presidential runoff well in hand.”
Democracy is a threat to democracy.
>> the far-right
Goebbels Ministry of Spoof lives on
> what’s funny was that the polls said Bolsanaro was going to lose..
This wasn’t just in the presidential race — senatorial and gubernatorial elections also had the polls substantially overstating the left’s (PT - Workers’ Party) vote share.
This is a repeat of a huge left-wing bias in the polls in the last Brazilian national election, in 2018 — many conservative (PL) candidates won handily then even though they were “supposed” to lose according to the polls.
Glenn Greenwald (who lives in Brazil) has written about these polls, which were so bad as to be completely ridiculous.
