The world is moving from the frying pan to the deep fat fryer.
It will be only temporary, as the world moves to the smelter.
Because if you launch anything from Japan at NK, it will head towards either the PRC or Russia.
I am fairly certain that various Japanese Ministers of Defense has pointed this out to more than one civilian; professional militaries typically object to civvies starting a war that is not winnable.
Note that I said “Why isn’t Japan returning the provocation in SOME FORM?” I didn’t suggest the use of ballistic missiles.
South Korea’s response was to launch a missile of its own but it suffered a malfunction and crashed near a South Korean city. South Korea also engaged in show-of-force drills along with U.S. F-16’s and ‘attacked’ an island target off South Korea’s west coast using JDAM bombs. Following that there were surface-to-surface missile launches.
This response illustrates the kinds of things Japan could do to discourage blatantly provocative acts by the Norks.
