UK _ Chainsaw sales soar as Brits buy 35,000 woodburners in three months to keep themselves warm during the energy crisis

Retail giant Toolstation revealed that sales have rocketed by a third recently The news comes as people have been finding cheaper ways to heat their homes Experts warn the rise in woodburning could lead to higher pollution levels

The energy crisis is leading cash-strapped Britons to explore new ways to generate heat.

First, sales of woodburning stoves soared by 40 per cent. Now, it has emerged that chainsaws have seen a surge in demand – to cut wood for the stoves.

Retail giant Toolstation yesterday revealed that sales have rocketed by a third in recent weeks. The firm believes the increase is driven by customers using them to cut logs up for woodburners.

A spokesman for the firm, which has more than 500 UK stores, said: ‘During the last few weeks we’ve seen sales of chainsaws increase by a third.

‘We suspect the demand is being driven by customers firing up their chainsaws to cut logs and timber for woodburners as many try to soften the impact of energy hikes.’

The rush to buy chainsaws comes as families face the prospect of energy bills hitting record highs despite the new £2,500 price cap for a typical household. Woodburning stove sales leapt by 40 per cent between April to June to over 35,000 compared to 25,000 for the same period last year.

The Stove Industry Alliance said the trend ‘clearly indicates that consumers are taking action to help cushion themselves against spiralling home heating bills’.

The rush to buy chainsaws comes as people across the country have been exploring cheaper alternatives to gas to heat their homes following an announcement by UK watchdog Ofgem that it would increase the energy price cap.

Energy bills were set to rise to £3,549 from tomorrow for the typical household,

This is mostly male activity and a male path of action for possible blackouts.

So this would probably benefit mostly married women and of course single men, or women living with men.

I expect to see an increase in gardening accidents over the next several months.

We have HETAS regulations on how the wood burners and multi-fuel stoves have to work, to reduce pollution. We also have guidance on seasoning wood properly, so it gets the most heat with the least air pollution.

That’s fair - London used to be called “The Big Smoke” and smog used to be a killer. Burning damp logs is a bit pointless anyway.

I replaced our Victorian open fireplaces several years ago, before the regs were tightened, so they pump out enough heat to cook on without letting the cold in when not in use. Timber is seasoned and dried for a minimum of 6 months before I move it into a store nearer the house.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe wood does not burn as cleanly as natural gas?

"10,000 wood burning stoves in stock? Seems highly unlikely."

It is more than one store, it is a chain of stores. And no, 10,000 stoves is not a lot when you've had months to stock up on inventory because you're rulex by idiots.

I’d be also betting a good number of people in the ER with chainsaw related injuries as one thing I learned from working with one (at my property with a local farmer) is that it is not about how dangerous chainsaws are, but how very unforgiving they can potentially be.

I’m sure there’s dead fall all over in many areas. I could hear my house for years on that alone where I’m at and I cut and split 2-3 cords a year mainly for the deck fireplaces.

I suspect a chainsaw ban will be coming soon in the UK.

If true I’m very surprised the UKSchwab govt doesn’t regulate woodstoves as tightly as guns. Personal resourcefulness is not a quality the ruling class likes to encourage.

“Correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe wood does not burn as cleanly as natural gas?”

You are correct. Natural gas is the cleanest fuel. When you live in a valley with lots of neighbors who have wood stoves, a smokey haze can form during some weather.

When we lived in the Seattle area, they used to have “inversion days” or something like that, when the use of fireplaces was prohibited. Is England subject to the same weather conditions? All that freshly cut lumber being burned into a low-hanging cloud cover could certainly create an issue.

“…the energy crisis…”

And, strangely, there is enough energy readily available in the earth to have us all swimming in supply of the stuff. Imagine if anyone in government actually cared or worried about the wealth and comfort of their voters? It’s most singular that they don’t seem to or seem to have to, as Sherlock Holmes might observe…

If TPTB think people are just going to sit by and freeze all in the name of green energy because the green lobby says climate change is an issue, the DS is stupider than they think we are.
