The vaccine mandate imposed by New York City has turned out to be extremely costly for one of the NBA's best players, Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving.
He said Monday that he was given an ultimatum, get vaccinated with one of the experimental mRNA COVID-19 vaccines or forgo a contract extension worth more than $100 million.
If he chose to be unvaccinated, Irving said, he was told by management "there's a level of uncertainty of your future, whether you're going to be in this league, whether you're going to be on this team."
"It's not giving somebody an ultimatum to get a vaccine," he said. "That's a completely personal choice. I stand by Kyrie. I think if he wants, he's made that choice. That's his prerogative completely."
Irving has opted into the final year of his current contract, worth more than $36.5 million this season.
On Twitter last week, the NBA superstar spoke out against the continuation of mandates.
"If I can work and be unvaccinated, then all of my brothers and sisters who are also unvaccinated should be able to do the same, without being discriminated against, vilified, or fired," he wrote. "This enforced Vaccine/Pandemic is one the biggest violations of HUMAN RIGHTS in history."

In his next breath he spouts flat earth stuff and
pretty much called the Pilgrims white murderers.
*************
Not sure what his inference as to “white murderers” is.
But for sure the Pilgrims changed this part of the world
now called the USA. It took a few hundred years but they
were the ultimate cause.
The entire sports media vilified him and Aaron Rogers and anyone else who refused the shot. How stupid was it to not let him play in NYC while he could play at other arenas.
Personally, I blame the Vikings.
Let that sink in.
They attested to their own fraud when issuing the illegal mandate.
Nuremberg II
Several brave Americans stepped up and spoke out against this tyranny. Some we’ll never know about and it was a hard thing to do.
Dr. Simone Gold went to jail. Thank you Kyrie and everyone else.
I understand he has a lot of money but he still gave up a lot of money.
That’s a truth.
Personally I feel many sports and entertainers are overpaid. But obviously millions of people happily pay to see rich guys play kid’s games.
No he didn’t. These stories talk about the extension that got pulled as if that’s lost money. It isn’t. He lost half a season’s salary. That’s it.
Oh and the “kid’s game” thing is completely ignoring how sports happen. They actually get invented at the adult level first. Then kids play them.
Half a season’s salary ID a lot of money.
Basketball was invented to be a form of exercise for students who couldn’t get outside in harsh winter weather. Peach baskets were the original target. I learned that in fourth or fifth grade.
I wonder if organized sports would exist was there no gambling.
IS a lot of money.
Damn autocorrect.
Not always. “A lot of money” has a variable definition. And with Kyrie’s bank account that ain’t a lot of money. Keep in mind Kyrie also pulls in $17 million a year in endorsements. Does tons of paid appearances. And even starred in a movie. So that half a season’s salary was probably around a quarter of his income. Maybe less.
What kind of students played basketball? College students. How old are college students? Adult. Sports are invented with adults.
Yes organized sports would exist without gambling. Heck it’s only recently that the the pro sports could even make money off that. And college still can’t.
