Vladimir Putin will formally annex occupied regions of Ukraine to Russian in a major speech tomorrow, the Kremlin has confirmed, as he attempts to regain the initiative after his forces suffered a humiliating rout earlier this month.
Putin's speech comes after Russian-backed proxy governments in Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions held sham referendums earlier this week on whether to go ahead with the move.
Armed Russian soldiers taking ballot boxes door-to-door left the results in no doubt, and Ukraine along with its Western allies have vowed not to recognise the results.
But it still marks a turning point in the war because it will allow PUTIN TO SPIN THE LIE to his own people that any attack on those regions is an attack on Russia itself - paving the way for him to escalate, possibly as far as using nukes.
Ukraine has vowed to defy that threat is continuing to attack into those regions today, with a key town in Donetsk now all-but surrounded.
Lyman, which sits close to the Donets river, is being flanked from northwest and southeast, with Kyiv's troops having cut off all escape routes bar one.
Putin's forces are facing 'imminent defeat' in the town which is a key supply hub for troops in the region.
Taking the town would clear the way for Ukraine to attack into neighbouring Luhansk province - which is almost completely under Russian control.
Putin maintains that the ultimate goal of his 'special military operation' is the liberation of both Donetsk and Luhansk, and defeats there would make it impossible to spin the war as a success.
It comes off the back of a devastating Ukrainian counter-attack east out of Kharkiv earlier this month that returned thousands of square miles to Kyiv's control and buckled Russia's frontline.

“You are in direct conflict with the opinions of the founding fathers.”
Was never a real supporter of Ron Paul. Did not disagree with him on many issues but it was his delivery that put me off.
Besides that..you, me and anyone other that knew the constitution? He was preaching to the choir.
My take was..to get to where Ron Paul wanted to go would take decades. It took decades to get to where we are now.
The last and only solution? Secession IMO. This can no longer be fixed. It has gone way outside of that.
Here is something I pointed out on another thread today.
Since the turn of the last century, the USA has been in a constant state of foreign wars and interventions.
Most of them brought by DEMOCRATS!
We were warned by our founders to NEVER get into foreign entanglements. So WTF did the Demoncrats do? Got us into foreign entanglements.
To top it off..Democrats approved of the forced internment of German nationals during WW1 (Hutterites, etc) and the forced internment during WW2 of a peoples who’s only crime was the shape of their eyes. Funny thing..they did not seem to think that a German or a Italian was that much of a problem then did they?
And here we are. People on this forum supporting them.
BTW..the Hutterites are against war..I guess that is why they were the enemy according to a Demoncrat.
“You just labeled yourself as a Democrat.”
I did? How, pray, did I do that? Because I disagree with you?
You would have been right at home in the 16th century, when ignorant bigots burned someone who dared to have a thought different from theirs.
And you call yourself a Texan? If you are, you’re from Austin, where NO ONE outside of Austin recognizes an Austinian as Texan.
““You are in direct conflict with the opinions of the founding fathers.”
You are in direct conflict with the 21st century.
You know, we can do this all night. But I don’t play juvenile games with immature little kids. So, you can play by yourself; which, I’m sure, you do; in so many ways, and on so many levels.
Paul was a professor. Not a President. Not a good public speaker. Far better on his podcast. Rand would make a better President.
Nope. Because you are basically saying that original intent is an anachronism. There is no other way to interpret the just of your comments.
Great points.
We have ppl here who supported the Patriot Act. I wonder how many of them have see the Corbett Report’s 4 part series on false flags. We have a history of supporting the worst of the worst, all for our “interests” and then claiming the moral high ground. Well, now we clearly do NOT have the moral high ground. The leaders are depraved. And I for one am sick of seeing alleged “conservatives” supporting it.
“Because you are basically saying that original intent is an anachronism. There is no other way to interpret the just of your comments.”
That is a non-sequitur; a faulty conclusion.
And I assume by “original intent” you are referring to the US Constitution. I very much subscribe to “original intent” as it relates to the Constitution.
“But I don’t play juvenile games with immature little kids. So, you can play by yourself; which, I’m sure, you do; in so many ways, and on so many levels.”
AND here we are. The very first ones to claim others are guilty of the very thing they themselves are guilt of.
That is typical of a national socialist supporter.
“AND here we are. The very first ones to claim others are guilty of the very thing they themselves are guilt of.”
It wasn’t me who resorted to the equivalent of covering my ears and screeching, “Nanananana, can’t hear you!”
That was you.
Grow up.
Fact remains..
You are in direct conflict with the opinions of the founding fathers.
“Fact remains...You are in direct conflict with the opinions of the founding fathers.”
Well, you are wrong. For one thing, you say “the opinions” of the founding fathers, which necessarily implies ALL their opinions; otherwise, you would have said “an opinion,” or “some opinions.” Had I been alive in the late 18th century I would have agreed with them on the one opinion that is the subject of this conversation: Isolationism. But, I was not alive back then. I am alive in 2022, and the world is a vastly different place now.
What was reasonable 240 years ago is not necessarily reasonable today. For instance, I am in direct conflict with the medical treatment provided to George Washington, which was accepted and recognized at the time as proper: Bloodletting to cure illness, a cure that quite possibly killed him. Shall we go back to that, too?
My sincere apologies. Please forgive me.
Thank you. ♥️ May you have a blessed 2023.
What will you guys and western media say when this ends
Anyone digs about right beyond western propaganda can see it’s going badly for Z et al
However I expect for media salivation they will invade Russia and attack Belgorad with more than just missles since they can
It will fail but that would have western media pounding the bleachers for a week or two so there is that
I used to think Putin wanted just the west
As limited war didn’t work and now we’re somewhere around 5.5 on a 1-10 limited war to total war scale I think Putin intends to defeat Ukraine and us by proxy and make western Ukraine rump
Poland may grab some historical turf
Even Hungary and Romania might even in a pipe dream reach out for their ethnics in Ukraine
Zekenskys Ukraine is over as we know it
It’s only a matter of time and death and our tax dollars
If I were Ukraine I’d prolly invade Belgorad too
I think they have around 25,000 troops in position in the area
It would distract the R forces and be a temporary rallying cry
But would fail and result in more unsustainable casualties for them
And to you...(no exclamation points but originally I put two.😃)
