An old Soviet self-propelled howitzer called Gvozdika or "Carnation" is rolled out in an open field and put into position. Its barrel tilts up. "Fire!" comes the command.
The gunners hastily move away after the last shot, acting quickly.
Although the advancement of Ukrainian forces in the south is very slow, their artillery units remain busy.

The self-styled referendum is bringing a new threat to the local population - mobilisation. Many men could be drafted to fight for the Russian army.
Russian soldiers are already going house to house in some villages and writing down the names of male residents, local residents say. They claim soldiers have told them to be ready for a call-up after the referendum.
Men aged 18-35 are reportedly not allowed to leave the occupied territories any more.
Iryna left on 23 September, the first day of the so-called referendum, with her husband and two children. They wanted to stay in order to look after her paralysed 92-year-old grandmother.
"But when Putin announced the call-up, and we already knew about the referendum, it was clear there would be a mass mobilization and men would be detained right on the street irrespective of their age," she says.
"We could survive without gas and electricity, we could find solutions for that. But not for this. That was our red line," says Iryna.

I am glad the BBC is concerned.
Interesting, no reports on the draft on the Ukrainian side for all men 18-60 with a plethora of videos show Zelensky goons dragging 50 year olds out of pools or going through theaters to throw them into combat.
And, soon the draft will be all women 18-60.
sham referendums = CNN verbiage
One of the many reasons why Russia must not be allowed to take Ukraine is that would give them 43 million people to conscript from.
“Sham referendums”? I thought all election results were to be believed. /s
A 43 million very angry people, angry at the West for forcing the entire siituation. Look at the Chechens for reference and prepare lubrication.
Oh wait, so the democracy defenders actually don’t support democracy.
Expected.
A given, especially given those same democracy defenders own hypocrisy.
Be sure these same democracy defenders carry their collective hypocritical arses to Serbia and ask them their thoughts...

Ret Gen Petraeus said this morning that once this war is over, Ukraine will almost certainly be offered NATO membership. Trying to respect Russia’s sensitivities over the matter didn’t work out.
And for any Marshal plan to rebuild Ukraine, investors need to feel secure. So there will be security guarantees by the west and that most likely will be in the form of NATO membership.
The only one forcing the situation is Russia. Go home and the war ends.
There won’t be much Ukraine left once the feeding frenzy ends cause it won’t just be Russia carving up Ukraine.
The so-called “referenda” can hardly be called democracy. Or perhaps you also believe in the election results in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea?
Patraeus is such a winner, you need to trust him on that.:)
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Tehran moment in the US Embassy in Germany first.
Hey Mayór, haven’t you been called up yet? You are never going to make Podpolkóvnik posting on Free Republic.
“Seems that the sham referendums were not only land grabs but people and soldier grabs...”
So typical of Russia.
Do you realize that nobody is going away? Biden is set to lose another war.
“And, soon the draft will be all women 18-60.”
And, do you know what? Not a one of them would confuse degrees of latitude with degrees of temperature.
Tell it to the Serbian’s yo, tell it to the Serbian’s.

Everybody here is telling me Russia is good, Ukraine is bad. Yet, these people are forced to fight. I don’t think you can force people to fight. They will make poor soldiers. .
As I understand it, this was a fairly common situation for men (and women) in the first half of the 20th century in this part of the world. You were born a citizen of one nation, find yourself becoming a citizen of another, and before you knew it, becoming a ‘citizen’ of a third as borders were shifted right underneath your feet.
Born in Germany, become a citizen of Poland, and then find yourself a citizen of the USSR. All nations having a claim on your loyalty and the right to charge you with treason if you object.
Lol! I actually feel a bit sorry for the Russian Officers that will have to try and lead a group of angry forced Ukrainian conscripts that despise them. I’m guessing there are going to be a lot of “friendly fire” incidents.
