Hurricane Ian strengthened into a Category 3 early Tuesday while hammering western Cuba and is now headed into the Gulf of Mexico for a dangerous strike on Florida.

I​an rapidly intensified into a major hurricane at 2:30 a.m. EDT and then made landfall in western Cuba two hours later. It will emerge over the waters of the southeast Gulf of Mexico later Tuesday.

The eye of Ike passed about 5 miles east of me. 90+ mph winds
at my house. We stayed in case any windows were blown out.

It looks like the track predictions have changed and it is now forecast to come directly over me. It is also shown to be moving slow...5mph. It will take all day Thursday, 8 am until 8pm to move past...unless the track changes to some other unfortunate area. If I don’t post the APOD thread in the next few days, it will be because the power is out.

My 91 year old sister lives in NPR too, as does my 81 year old sister in an assisted living place, and I live in NPR too.

My older sister lives on the third floor of a condo, and all of her nearby neighbors on her floor are staying too. Less stress than being evacuated to some unknown place with unknown amenities. She and I live to the west of Hwy 19 also. Looks like Ian is landing south of Tampa, so may do less damage in NPR if we’re lucky.
