Michael is part of a very small but growing group of transgender adolescents who have had top surgery, or breast removal, to better align their bodies with their experience of gender. Most of these teenagers have also taken testosterone and changed their name, pronouns or clothing style.
Few groups of young people have received as much attention. Republican elected officials across the United States are seeking to ban all so-called gender-affirming care for minors, turning an intensely personal medical decision into a political maelstrom with significant consequences for transgender adolescents and their families.
Gender-related surgeries, in particular, have been thrust into the spotlight. Arizona and Alabama passed laws this year making it illegal for doctors to perform gender-related surgeries on transgender patients under 18. Conservative commentators with large followings on social media have recently targeted children’s hospitals that offer gender surgeries, leading to online harassment and bomb threats.
Genital surgeries in adolescents are exceedingly rare, surgeons said, but top surgeries are becoming more common. And while major medical groups have condemned the bans on gender-related care for adolescents, the surgeries have presented challenges for them.
Much research has shown that as adults, transgender men generally benefit from top surgery: It relieves body-related distress, increases sexual satisfaction and improves overall quality of life. A few small studies of transgender adolescents suggest similar benefits in the short term.
But some clinicians have pointed to the rising demand and the turmoil of adolescent development as reasons for doctors to slow down before offering irreversible procedures. Although medical experts believe the likelihood to be small, some patients come to regret their surgeries.

A caption says "Dr. Sidhbh Gallagher’s unusual embrace of social media platforms like TikTok has made her one of the most visible surgeons in her field." I have more respect for the women on OnlyFans.
The people that push this on kids should be lined up against a wall and given their just reward.
The lawsuits that come out of this are going to change the medical profession forever.
>> The people that push
... and perform the mutilations
they’re predators
Not too long ago “doctors” in Europe were tried, convicted and executed for doing things like this.
Why the top surgery? Fat men have man boobs. A lot of lesbian/trans are fat. So?????????
“to better align their bodies with their experience of gender.”
Good Lord. Can’t imagine living a life that complicated. Too much work.
Only children who don't have to work to keep from starving.
turning an intensely personal medical decision into a political maelstrom with significant consequences for transgender adolescents
A steaming pile of NYT horse manure.
Just in case there are questions, there is no such thing as a transgender adolescent.
OK, a fifteen-year-old girl who weighs 80 pounds tells everyone that she is obese and needs desperately to loose weight. She presents as basically skin and bones. As a medical practitioner (I am not one) do you:
a: refer her to a psychiatrist/psychologist and dietician to try deal with her mental and health issues—or
b: agree with her that she is in fact obese and prescribe diet pills and teach her how vomit after meals so that she can lose more weight.
How are the situations all that different?
Gotta be expensive.
Watch the movie/documentary by Matt Walsh called “What is a Woman” if you can stomach it. I could not. What they are doing to kids is horrifying. No joke...they give kids the exact same chemical castration drug that is given to sex offenders.
"Few groups of women have received as much attention. Republican elected officials across the United States are seeking to ban all use of thalidomide, turning an intensely personal medical decision into a political maelstrom with significant consequences for pregnant mothers."
“Although medical experts believe the likelihood to be small, some patients come to regret their surgeries.”
I have heard the number up to 40%.
“Top surgery” is a nice-sounding term for what is really a major surgery called a double mastectomy-a treatment used for breast cancer...
And while major medical groups have condemned the bans on gender-related care for adolescents…

And by adolescents, they mean children.
Remember the far side cartoon of the one tusk elephant...Doctor Demento may have a meeting with destiny one day with a former top surgery patient (profoundly hoping for this outcome).
No biggie. If they change their minds, they can get implants, right?/s
‘Personal decision of a minor’ ???
Are they insane ?
Doctors and agents should be arrested as sex offenders, put in jail and forced to wear ankle monitors for sex offenders if they get out of prison.
One day, these kids will realize what has happened to them - most of them, anyway. There will be hell to pay, and only then will it happen. Until scores of them come out as vocal as possible, I worry that nothing will change. The activist lobby has too much money and support at their disposal.
I would have been one of these kids if this sort of thing happened when I was a teen. I was such a tomboy, hit puberty early (10), and hated my body. I still have issues with body image that will never go away because I was heavy and have lasting scars and excess skin I can’t afford to have removed (but a thirteen year-old can lop off her still-developing t¡ts and have it paid for by the state).
When I was about sixteen, we learned that I was going into kidney failure. Can you imagine your kid at that age with a real, serious health consition like that making their own medical decisions, without you present? Being told to take medications they don’t understand the mechanism of, without having the knowledge to ask about alternatives which may have fewer side-effects? Kids blindly agree with authority when they’re unsure, and while I was lucky enough to have the wherewithal to make decisions for myself (parents rarely had to intervene) because I educated myself in my free time, kids now are so far behind where I was at their age. They read some sh¡t online from, “The Trans Community” and take it as Gospel, with no questions asked. I always asked questions; it’s who I am.
Ask my mom. I was a pain in the ass.
Trans activists want to make it a physical health issue. Okay. What kid will you allow to make all of their own decisions when faced with cancer? A need for a transplant? Dialysis? You would force out parents under those circumstances too, for the sake of, “privacy” and, “safety”? Are they joking? Because according to them, those things aren’t so different.
