There was an incident on the Russian Baltic Sea pipeline, as confirmed by the Danish shipping authority. The operator Gascade speaks of a sharp drop in pressure in the tube. An accident is considered unlikely. The timing of the accident suggests sabotage.

Biden removed Trump’s sanction against the pipeline.

Looks like Germany will be inhibited about depending so much on the Russians or the Swiss in the future.
There was some talk in Germany of draining the considerable amount of gas already loaded in the pipeline but not accepting more. That option is now gone.
Putin assumed that his massaging the SPD's anti-Americanism, spreading enough payola to German politicians and businesses while making Germany so dependent on Russian gas would mean that Germany would veto any substantial EU or NATO responses. Another strategic failure on his part.

If it is a pipeline rupture, the escaping gas will give the obvious position of the break. Then again hydraulic pressure may exceed gas pressure at break point. Should there be loss of weight coat, expect the line to rise to surface. Hell, I spent hours in a three-man submarine chasing pipelines in the Persian Gulf. Pipe break can easily be determined.
I think that was Nord Stream 1. I don’t know if NS2 is even online yet.

Germany is on track to be burning their dead in order to stay warm this winter. There's a lot of rumbling that Germany may buckle and lift sanctions against Russia to get the gas turned back on.
If Germany lifts sanctions, the NATO alliance in Ukraine will crumble.
The U.S. might have wanted to ensure that this could not happen.

Send a pig through the line and find the break, then mark with a buoy dammit. Germany has lost its Blitzkrieg additude.
First off, the Greens are actually happy about the gas cutoff and are fiercely pro-Ukrainian. If Scholz tries to back off, the government will collapse.
Second, because of their foot dragging, the Germans (and the French) have more or less removed any leverage they have over the Ukraine war. Ukraine is being primarily armed and equipped by the US, Poland and the Scandinavians.
The Germans could try to lift sanctions, but they would face a lot of opposition in the EU. Only the Nord Stream 1 pipeline is now functional but unused. Another "accident" and they will have no choice but to get gas from somewhere else.

That’s right. He is displaying his power to cut off natural gas from everyone no matter what it costs. He’s trying to flex muscles, some he doesn’t even have yet. And he is willing to lose millions to do it. And it will have a long term effect adding on to the sanctions and the fight back Russia has already had and will get worse with.
