That’s a pretty cool description of where you are. I know nothing about TN except that Sgt. York was from around there somewhere. In the movie it was always about the “bottom land” (like your “holler” maybe) being better for farming than the “top land”. Bottom land maybe also better for escaping these extreme weather events.
Actually, it’s both.
You’ll hear farmers here talk about creek bottom and river bottom land being the best for farming. The land along a creek or a river is flat and often floods when the “crick is up”. LOL That causes it to be really rich and well fertilized. Higher land runs off and most of the nutrients and best parts of the dirt goes with it. A holler is land that is surrounded by ridges and hills and usually covered with trees. Most old folk built their houses or cabins off the valley floor and up against one of the ridges when possible for protection from wind and sun. I can remember an old neighbor of mine laughing about all of the young people building their homes on top of hills for the view. He said they’ll be too hot in summer and probably “get blowed off that hill” in a wind. He laughed about them cutting all the trees away from their homes because the trees made shade for the hot TN summers.
You almost need an interpreter to talk to some of the old mountain folk around here.
Even my house, at only 70-years old, was built the old way with a door on each end to create a wind suction effect. It has big windows. If you open the doors on both ends and open the windows, the wind whistles through the house pretty fast and cools the house.
I grew up talking to grandparents, great-grandparents, and old farmers. They had NO education but were some of the smartest people you could ever meet. I think it’s sad that so many kids don’t have grandparents and great-grandparents to counter what they learn in “woke” schools now.
Mine taught me how to live, grow my own food, and take care of myself.
I love it. Good ol’ American “rugged individualism”.
Are these people smart enough to figure out what liars the Democrat (and RINO) Left are by “giving” them whatever just to take away everything they have including their freedom? Do you feel like you’re in the political majority or minority over there?

I have a black neighbor that flies a Confederate flag and a Trump flag.
Everywhere I go I see big stickers on pickup truck windows that says FJB! He is very much hated here, and people don’t care to tell you how they feel. There are Trump signs everywhere. They are in yards, on businesses, and on vehicles.
Look up The Battle of Athens. That’s where I live. It probably hasn’t changed much.
Now, you will find more libs in the big cities like Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis but even they, with the exception of Memphis, aren’t as bad as in most blue states. Cleveland, the city just South of me, is having a population explosion because there are a lot of jobs. A lot of these new people come from blue states. If they want to move to a red state for a job, I don’t care, as long as they don’t bring blue state policies with them. It’s a culture shock for them in my town when they see a tent “gospel singing” being held in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
We aren’t afraid to tell them to go back where they came from if they don’t like our American culture and we can do it SO politely, or not.
It’s lore. We all need more of that passed down education. Here in So Cal, my kids got just a glimpse of that. They took marine science in high school from a teacher who incorporated local lore about our city, Torrance, weekly trips to the beach to study local conditions and count clamshells, measure waves, etc. By the end of it, they had some of that knowledge of and appreciation for their little place in the world, of the natural conditions underlying their suburban life. We all need to know where we live, on that more basic level.

Why is the Left able to commandeer our beloved cities? Are there any big cities that are not run by the Left? How does the Patriotic Right get them back?
Most libs live in cities. They don’t know where their food comes from or how to live without somebody telling them everything. Most big cities have liberal mayors. They gravitate toward cities because everything is taken care of for them. They have public transportation, public housing, a grocery store or convenience store on every corner. The latter comes in very handing for looting. They are afraid of not living in a hive of others.
Me....I feel safe in the country where it’s dark at night and your closest neighbor is not in sight. We have some meth cookers and addicts that have to steal but they never do it while people are home, or at night, because it’s a 100% certainty that they will be dead. LOL We have LEO that will tell you that if they get in the house, shoot them, and we’ll be there as soon as we can. They might show up an hour later.
They don’t understand our need for firearms to protect ourselves against criminals because they have a cop on every corner.
They fear us. That’s why they hate us and feel like they have to crowd together for protection. You rarely, if ever, find true libs living in the country.
The only way I see to be rid of them is for them to die off naturally after we rid the schools of liberalism. Kids are being taught by them so they will become like them. Red state country schools aren’t as bad, but it is in some of the colleges here.
The thing that keeps me going is knowing that they are in the minority, and we are the majority. It seems like there are more of them because they are all concentrated in big cities, and they are loud and obnoxious. People in rural red states know what is going on. Farmers and ranchers know what is going on. The people that matter, that actually work and run this country like farmers, truck drivers, factory workers, etc. know what is going on and I can tell you for certain, they are not cowards. They are not afraid of the left, of Antifa, BLM, and other Democrat sponsored domestic terrorists.

Freedom cannot be sustained without faith in God. And the lack of faith in God may be why city folks tend to be Leftist. I happen to love the city but I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Patriot from the SF Bay Area in Califonia - go figure.
My grandparents were both raised on a farm but lived their adult lives in Chattanooga, so it happens. :-) My granddaughter was raised on the farm and lives in Chattanooga. A lot of patriots live in cities and the cities are better for them, but they are outnumbered. I hope if a meltdown comes, all patriots grab their bugout bags and head for the country because the feral libs will be out for blood since they don’t know how to take care of themselves. Be prepared to leave the city when necessary but enjoy it while you can.
