Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni has won Italy's election, according to exit polls, and is on course to become the country's first female prime minister.
If they are confirmed, Ms Meloni will aim to form Italy's most right-wing government since World War Two.
That will alarm much of Europe as Italy is the EU's third-biggest economy.
She is predicted to win between 22-26% of the vote, says a Rai exit poll, ahead of her closest rival Enrico Letta from the centre left.
That dominance was underlined by the first projection from Rai, which gave her more than a quarter of the vote for the Senate. Projections are based on concrete results. Italians also vote for the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies.
Ms Meloni's right-wing alliance now looks to have control of both houses, with a projected 42.2% of the Senate vote.
Exit polls put the centre-left alliance well behind with 25.5%-29.5% and Democratic Party figure Debora Serracchiani said it was a sad evening for Italy. The right "has the majority in parliament, but not in the country", she insisted.
The left failed to form a viable challenge with other parties, after Italy's 18-month national unity government collapsed in July, and officials were downbeat even before the vote. The Five Star Movement under Giuseppe Conte is on course for third place but despite having several centre-left policies does not see eye to eye with Enrico Letta.
Turnout was dramatically low - 63.82% by the time polls closed - said Italy's interior ministry, almost 10 points down on 2018. Voting levels were especially poor in southern regions including Sicily.
The decision on who becomes Italy's next leader is up to the president, not Giorgia Meloni, and that will take time.

Meloni has ties to both Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party and Hungary’s ruling Fidez party, as well as Spain’s conservative Vox party.
Her likely coalition partner Matteo Silvini has ties to France’s National Front.
Together these parties make up the ‘rebel alliance’ against the Soros nazis running the European Union.

Let’s wait until something actually changes in Italy before we celebrate this questionable right wing politician.

Agree on Putin, but you need to look into Meloni a little deeper.
Meloni came down pretty hard on Pooty and Russia @ CPAC. It was the 1st subject she spoke about.
