Senate ratifies climate treaty that will raise cost of home appliances 'The last thing the American people need right now is another household necessity rising in price'

The Senate on Wednesday ratified an international treaty that mandates nations to phase out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) to protect the earth’s ozone layer, which will impose new standards that will raise the costs of air conditioning and refrigeration.

A group of 50 Senate Democrats and 19 Republicans voted to pass the Kigali Amendment to the 1987 United Nations (UN) Montreal Protocol. The amendment, which 27 Republicans voted to oppose, will limit the production and use of HFCs, man-made chemicals that are primarily used for cooling and refrigeration, by 85% over 15 years, which could substantially increase consumer and business costs in related industries.

I have a friend who owns an independent appliance store.

The biggest problem with appliances are they have too many fancy things added on to them. Generally, they are made a lot cheaper than they used to be. More plastic parts. Less metal parts.

The number one repair problem with refridgerator/freezers is the ice maker through the door. Get one with the ice maker in the freezer where you have to open the door to get the ice out of the tray.

Do not buy ANY appliances made by Samsung or LG.
Do not buy ANY appliances made by Fisher Paykel.

Buy a dishwasher with a SS tub made by Whirlpool/Kithcen Aid/Maytag/Amanna. They are all the same company. All made in the same factory in Iowa. Bosch is the only other dishwasher you should consider. They are more difficult to repair though because they do not have the service panel in the front bottom like all the above.

Buy a top loader washing machine made by either Maytag or Speed Queen. Speed Queen still makes them with a dial to turn on the cycle. Just like they did in the 1960s. Maytag makes one with a ten year warranty.

Buy a dryer with the lint collection screen on the top on the dryer. With a dial and push buttons to change the settings and cycles. They will last 25 years. They are a simple machine.

Enforcement is up to us. But will we ever do what is necessary? Probably not in our lifetime.

Probably because by Leftist design, so many don't understand the incredible value of their freedom from government coercion nor the importance of the Constitution in protecting their freedom from government coercion.

Milton Friedman went to his grave lamenting such.

Now people have them up their attic just collecting dust because they know the LEDs are the perfect light.

If the government stayed out of it we could have avoided the whole CFL phase (except for the few who wanted them) and gone right from incandescents to LED.

Except for mild Energy Star ratings, computer monitors went from CRT to LED screens smoothly with no onerous regulations.

I remember when they phased out R-12 for cars and guys were putting in propane replacements and there was total panic.

Now something similar is gonna be mainstream

To be valid, a U.S. law MUST be constitutional (US Const., Art, VI, Cl. 2). Otherwise it is to be nullified, ignored and cancelled.

That's for the courts to decide, isn't it.

I think all of these anti-CFC laws are bull, as the hole in the Ozone being linked to R-12 and R-22 is about as tenuous as measuring globull warming.

Keynesians just love it. It helps us in keeping the national debt going up by trillions each year.

There is still one incandescent bulb in my garage. Every other on has been replaced with LED. That one bulb was here when I bought the house 22 years ago and may be from when the house was built in ‘95. I think there is a bulb in a museum or firehouse that they have been burning close to 100 years.

We have 25 acres of woods and wood burning stoves...There is a reason we moved here from Seattle in 2011.

Nice!

I have 10 acres, but most of my trees are too young for firewood, and I'm still working on getting my house built. The plan is to use a rocket mass heater, because I can run it on twigs and prunings. That also makes it easier on my bad shoulder, because I'll be able to cut all my firewood with pruning shears instead of a saw.

Just an option in case anyone reading this needs it :)

I think they want me living in a Teepee.

That would involve killing warm, soft, fuzzy, cuddly buffaloes to get their skins for your teepee, so don't be silly. They want you living in caves. For mother earth.

my 16 year old dryer went out. I was going to buy a new one until someone here said it might be easy to fix it.

So I dragged the thing out and replaced a couple of parts . it might be good for another year before something else goes out that I am not going to fix

If I have to replace washer or dryer I am going with basic models without all the fancy stuff
