When it comes to President Biden’s sweeping plan to forgive thousands of dollars in federal student loans, a majority of New Yorkers support the move, according to a fresh Siena College poll.
The poll found that by 56 to 33 percent, New Yorkers supported the plan, which would forgive up to $20,000 in debt for those who received Pell Grants with loans held by the Department of Education.
Non-Pell Grant recipients would have $10,000 in student debt canceled.
Among those polled, 29 percent think Biden’s plan goes too far, while 21 percent said it doesn’t go far enough. Thirty-nine percent said the plan is the right approach, according to the poll.
Pollsters also found that 38 percent of New Yorkers reported having taken out a federal student loan to pay for college, with just over half (54 percent) saying they have paid their loan back in full.
Those who still have a balance due on their student loan made up 45 percent of borrowers, or 17 percent of all New Yorkers, the poll found.
As to why, exactly, they support the president’s loan forgiveness plan, 57 percent of New Yorkers said the move will allow many Americans to escape the burden of student debt and will help the economy.
Over one-third (35 percent) disagreed with that notion, saying that canceling student debt will increase inflation.
Opponents also argued that the move is unfair to those who already paid off their loans, or never took out loans to begin with.
“Majorities of New Yorkers support the president’s plan to cancel up to $20,000 worth of student loans for some, up to $10,000 for others, and to cap the amount any borrower must pay each month at 5 percent of their earnings,” said Siena College Research Institute Director, Don Levy.
“Support is greatest among Democrats, Blacks, those with a balance on their student loans and New Yorkers under 50 years of age. Nearly two-thirds of Republicans and a plurality of independents oppose the plan.”
Levy added that at least 60 percent of those under 50 support the plan, claiming it will give them a better chance to achieve the American Dream and benefit the economy.
The Siena College poll was conducted between Sunday, Aug. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 1, by random phone calls to 403 New York adults, using both landline and cellphone numbers.
Another 400 adults were polled from a “proprietary online panel of New Yorkers.”
Why be surprised? A necessary aspect of the Left is that they are generous with other people’s money.
It doesn’t matter who supports it as much as it matters who is furious about it. Folks on the right won’t be motivated to vote Lib, even if they do take the handout. If folks who were already going to vote Dem are for it, it doesn’t motivate them further... they already got theirs. On the other hand, if folks on the left who were left out of the gibsmedat outlay decide the forgiveness means they don’t vote democrat this cycle, that’s something. If folks who weren’t going to vote are now motivated to vote because they didn’t get something that they’re now on the hook for paying for, that’s also something.
Of course...Dems will pay 10k a year in extra taxes, just so they can feel honored to receive a less valuable check back from government. In this mindset they feel entitled and valued.
I’m not aware of any restriction that prevents New Yorkers from voluntarily subsidizing the educations of their residents. They are furthermore welcome to sponsor anyone else that wants a free education. I just don’t believe they are entitled to steal the resources of anyone else to accomplish their objectives.
Maybe the end-result should be an extra $10k tax on everyone, then the state can ‘gift’ it back in $10k of value (for school, for housing, for gambling, etc). Then everyone would be happy over the $10k gift business....not realizing it was their own money to start with.
That should be made the official New York State moto: Gibs me dat!.
I sold my house and airplane when the oilfield went down the tubes in 1983. I went to school again to become a pharmacist. My last year of such I was broke and took out a student loan.
I graduated and paid off my student loans in advance. I had a degree that paid well. I chose this degree course for the fact it paid well. Chem, Math, Physics, Botany, Physiology, etc. is not easy.
Loan forgiveness is simply wrong. It is a tax on those that did not go to school that now enjoy higher wages due their education with the exception of liberal arts. Those degrees in liberal arts are mostly worthless.
So... I guess this means that the Dumocrats have the New York votes... Like anybody in NY would vote Republican.
>> The poll found that by 56 to 33 percent, New Yorkers supported the plan
56 to 33 ??? lol... BS!
WTF is this Nassau rag — Nassau County? Yeah, right
>> New York is the original “Gibs me dat” state.
Not exactly. The urban scum don’t represent. Trust me.
Of course they do.
Rural New York State is beautiful, and the people are nice.
Staten Island & Suffolk (downstate) went for Trump in both 2016 & 2020. Most upstate counties also went for Trump.
Frustrating the deranged Left have control of the state.
Let this report be a warning to parents about which schools are producing unemployable graduates.

Good for them, now let them pay for it.......
