A Tesla Megapack battery caught fire this morning at the local utility company PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage facility in Monterey County, California, as reported by local news stations KSBW Action News 8 and KRON4.
Now there’s an alert from Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, North County Fire Protection District, and Pacific Gas & Electric issuing a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby areas, complete with an interactive map showing which areas are affected and road closures.
The fire started at around 1:30AM this morning, according to PG&E’s operations comm manager, Jeff Smith. Smith tells The Verge that PG&E is working with fire and emergency services to provide enough space to safely stop the spread of the fire. As of 1:55PM ET, it appears that the fire is still burning.

How sweet. The emergency management people are callingg it a “power plant fire” and an energy storage facility incident.
Talk about manipulation of the truth and the pubic.
“The more energy you cram into chemical bonds, the more volatile the bonds. That’s not going to change. The batteries will always be a potential safety problem.”
The chemical bonds in gasoline is higher. I guess that is why it is such a safety problem.
Actually a bullet will go thru a gas tank with no consequences other than a leak.

except in hollywood where it can create a major explosion, or kill an actor..
“Some fire stations won’t put water on a battery car.”
Which ones? Tesla says to use water.

Attack
Wear full personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus.
Secure a large, continuous and sustainable water supply — one or more fire hydrants or multiple water tenders. Use a large volume of water such as master stream, 2 1/2-inch or multiple 1 3/4-inch fire lines to suppress and cool the fire and the battery.
Treat all conductive surfaces as if they are energized until they are proven to be safe.
“Tesla says to put some water on it. Have they tried that yet?”
YES
They are a mere few hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean...
A math novice?
Not true, unless you're using military tracer or incendiary ammo. Copper and lead just punch holes. Plus, fuel "cell" tanks made to racing safety specs can be made self-sealing.
Given ongoing industry big-bucks R&D, automakers (both EV and ICE) will continue advancing auto safety. Two decades ago, almost all auto industry "experts" claimed EVs will never catch on and are a total waste of time. Tesla proved them all wrong.
Suddenly, most automakers today are finally starting to at least talk about EVs and some are even starting to produce them. Of course, Tesla's already been making EVs for two decades, and Musk regularly launches U.S. astronauts into space in his SpaceX rockets, on behalf of NASA and the U.S. government. So, Musk probably has a decent clue what's needed over time to substantially reduce the risk you mentioned.
Shame that Baldwin played Ryan in that movie. But Fred Thompson was about as perfect a pick as you could get for that role.

But they might make a good substitute for a thermite bomb.

I know I shouldn’t laugh but I have to chuckle a little bit.
All the green energy and EV nerds will fight you to the death over how great all things electric are.

“Amazon and Walmart are not using theirs anymore.”
Wrong! And YOUR link proves YOUR lie.
“As inspections are completed, our onsite solar systems are being powered back on.
More likely just a fanbois, willfully ignorant of the fact that gasoline ICEs can and do often have small fuel leaks that don't present any danger.
On the other hand, 400 volts @500 amps is potentially lethal regardless how small the leak is.
Anybody watch F1 (Grand Prix) auto racing? In 2014 they switched to a hybrid engine format with an energy recovery system charging supercapacitors, which are like storage batteries on steroids. Because of the stored electrical charge, when the driver exit the vehicle he has to jump off, leap into the air so he's never in contact with the car and the ground at the same time. Otherwise he could be in danger of the supercaps coupling to the ground through him and frying him to a crisp.

None of those are EV’s.
None of those are EV batteries.

Tesla big battery fire in Victoria under control after burning more than three days
A large blaze at Victoria’s “big battery” project has been brought under control by firefighters after burning for more than three days, allowing investigators to begin examining the site.
A Tesla battery bank caught fire while it was being set up in Moorabool on Friday morning, and then spread to a second battery.
Back to the drawing board..
