The number of people experiencing extreme hunger has more than doubled in some of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, the charity group Oxfam International said in a new report.
Some 48 million people are now suffering from acute hunger, the group said, up from 21 million in 2016. Nearly 18 million of those people — in countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia and Zimbabwe — are on the brink of starvation, their lives already disrupted by war, displacement, economic insecurity and the coronavirus pandemic.
Conflict remains the primary driver of hunger, but “the onslaught of climate disasters is now outpacing poor people’s ability to cope, pushing them deeper into severe hunger,” Gabriela Bucher, executive director of Oxfam International, said in a statement.
The report found a strong correlation between extreme weather and rising hunger in 10 climate hot spots, which are Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Guatemala, Haiti, Kenya, Madagascar, Niger, Somalia and Zimbabwe. The countries were identified as hot spots because they had the highest number of United Nations humanitarian appeals for weather-related crises since 2000.
While it is difficult to measure the exact direct impact of climate change on hunger, the report said, as extreme weather “becomes more fierce and more frequent,” it is devastating the lives of millions of people, destroying homes and crops.
The report notes that countries “least responsible” for the climate crisis are suffering the most from its impact. Together, the most vulnerable nations account for just 0.13 percent of global carbon emissions but “sit in the bottom third of countries least ready for climate change,” the report says.

YAWN
Could it be because they are so busy killing each other they forgot how to grow food?
Was there any extreme hunger 40 years ago when the “climate experts” were warning us about the next impending Ice Age?
Schwab and his band of merry Leftist, etc. idiots are gleeful rubbing their collective hands together.
I mean geez, these idiots been talking the world needing a huge thinning anyhow given its overpopulation, undesirables, etc.......
Really?
Neo-Bolsheviks: Poverty and famine is cuz capitalism and climate.
Hotspot is being defined by who does the most paperwork to get free money.
Reminds me of Sam Kinnison reacting to Sally Struthers: “YOU look like you could do without a cheeseburger or two. Why don’t YOU feed them?”
Faulty cause and effect.
Just picking one country’s name out of the hat: Afghanistan.
It’s very hard having much sympathy for Afghanistan.
We (USA) tried to modernize them, or at least provide a choice. For our efforts, we were mostly attacked at our headquarters and vilified in their mosques.
The Chinese may have better luck in ‘civilizing’ such a place, while they set up to mine for minerals.
The Chinese have a reputation for being merciless in their chosen pursuits of the moment. They are unbothered by workplace policies that result in treating their workers like slaves. Same thing is going on in parts of Africa, as the Chinese mine for cobalt.
soylent green is people
That's from the excerpt, so yes, that's exactly the reason. And it's something they can actually do something about, if they want to.
The Chinese aren’t going much care if they’re civilized or not. They’ll pay off the tribal leaders & imams to let them have access to the mineral wealth which is considerable. Let them fight among themselves (Will likely encourage them to!), persecute woman, rape girls & boys and live in the 8th century tribal lifestyle they seem to prefer.
In every case they made the wrong choice.
They cannot feed themselves-—and they keep breeding more copies of themselves.
Its not just “hunger” according to this “journalist”
But it’s EXTREME hunger!
