A fire engulfed a skyscraper in the central Chinese city of Changsha, with authorities saying that no casualties had yet been found.
The blaze broke out in a 42-floor building housing an office of the state-owned telecommunications company China Telecom, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.
“Thick smoke billowed from the site, and dozens of floors burned ferociously,” CCTV reported.
The provincial fire department said later in a social media post that “at present, the fire has been extinguished, and we have not yet discovered any casualties”.

Probably just getting rid of another vacant building...
China has its own “Towering Inferno”.
China must not subscribe to the IBC.
Yikes. Looks like there will be many casualties.
Yep, that will buff right on out. But the smoke, that might take more time!
Hopefully the building was empty, as many are in China.
Did it collapse into its own footprint?
Maybe China’s construction methods are superior to ours?
A steel tower totally engulfed in flames that didn’t drop to powder within seconds.
Extinguishing that, would be a pretty good trick.
The logistics of it would be a nightmare.
How could you get enough lines to bring that under control?
The water pressure alone would make it pretty difficult.
For everyone’s sake, I hope this report is accurate. I’ll
be waiting to see corrected information.
Doesn’t look like they have much of a fire barrier between floors does it?...
Hmmm, might it just be possible the Chinese (with their real estate woes) have some people who have discovered arson/insurance fraud?
Just a WAG.
The 218-metre (715-foot) building was completed in 2000 and is located near a major ring road, according to CCTV.
Deadly fires are common in China, where lax enforcement of building codes and rampant unauthorised construction can make it difficult for people to flee burning buildings.
Looks like there is some mighty flammable cladding between the drywall and the outside skin of the building.
But I'll bet somebody saved a few cents during construction!
I hope everyone got out.
That's Truther talk. /S
“A steel tower totally engulfed in flames that didn’t drop to powder within seconds.”
A traditional steel tower is going to be more robust and have more redundancies than did the cleverly engineered World Trade Center buildings. Note that the new WTC Tower is a traditional robust steel tower and not some clever engineering stunt.
Now THAT’S how you do BBQ!!
