A long-delayed plan to dismantle Interstate 375, a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) depressed freeway in Detroit that was built by demolishing Black neighborhoods 60 years ago, was a big winner of federal money Thursday, the first Biden administration grant awarded to tear down a racially divisive roadway.
The $104.6 million is among $1.5 billion in transportation grants handed out to 26 projects nationwide thanks to increased funding from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law.
It allows Michigan to move forward on its $270 million effort to transform the stretch in Detroit into a street-level boulevard, reconnecting surrounding neighborhoods and adding amenities, such as bike lanes. Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, two of the city's predominantly African American neighborhoods, were razed as part of the 1950s creation of an interstate highway system, displacing 100,000 Black residents and erecting a decades-long barrier between the downtown and communities to the east.

“SINCE WHEN do Interstates have bike lanes???”
Now that you mention it, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge [I-580] and San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge [I-80] have bike lanes. But the bicycle access to the bridges is from side streets.
If that’s the one I’m thinking of, it used to be a section of I-170, before it was decommissioned and re-signed as US 40. I-170 would have been a spur going from an also-non-existent section of I-70 into downtown.
Racist highways? Is that when potholes are strategically placed on the highway for black drivers? If a white or Asian person loses a tire from it, it’s not racist?
Nobody lives there anymore. They no longer need an interstate. Last one out of Detroit, please turn off the lights.
We demolished black neighborhoods in my hometown as Part of Urban Renewal...Definitely improved the neighborhood...the people were already on welfare. They went into better housing.
New construction in the inner city. Can the graffiti be far behind?
100,000 residents already on welfare.
Hawaii has Interstates, explain THAT to me!
Where Black Betty married Rock Bottom.
Bam ba Lam!
“You see that place with the sign that says ‘Rib Tips’?”
Sounds like a “no go” zone to me!
No. You have good eyes!
Bike lanes, eh. Perhaps they can build a bike store right next to the book store.
“Hey kids, you noticing all this plight? This will just make us appreciate what we have.....*Gunshot*......Roll ‘em up!”
Two explanations for Hawaiian interstate highways.
1) Graft and corruption.
2) Interstate highway system was initially sold as military logistics infrastructure. There is a need to shuttle military gear around Oahu.
