A long-delayed plan to dismantle Interstate 375, a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) depressed freeway in Detroit that was built by demolishing Black neighborhoods 60 years ago, was a big winner of federal money Thursday, the first Biden administration grant awarded to tear down a racially divisive roadway.
The $104.6 million is among $1.5 billion in transportation grants handed out to 26 projects nationwide thanks to increased funding from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law.
It allows Michigan to move forward on its $270 million effort to transform the stretch in Detroit into a street-level boulevard, reconnecting surrounding neighborhoods and adding amenities, such as bike lanes. Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, two of the city's predominantly African American neighborhoods, were razed as part of the 1950s creation of an interstate highway system, displacing 100,000 Black residents and erecting a decades-long barrier between the downtown and communities to the east.

The other major problem with highways in the northern part of the country that are below grade is snow removal.
Buffalo has an expressway that runs from the airport to downtown that is below grade. In the winter they have to blow the snow into dump trucks to clear the highway. It is just a poor design for that part of the country. Detroit probably has to do the same thing.
$270 million? Why not just remove the yellow and white lines and paint BLM on it at every mile. That would make the road a lot less “racist”.

An INTERSTATE highway, even one in an urban area is LIMITED ACCESS, NO BIKE LANES, and many times NOT STREET LEVEL.
They are meant to provide quick travel between centers of commerce and real work activity and those individuals who SUPPORT that.
Go on ahead and tear it down and make that stretch of road dangerous to travel or even get stuck in looking for help. Just more crime.
In reality, Buttigieg could give a crap about it. Just another Biden vote getter ploy. If you get some time try looking on the internet how Mayor Petey addressed the concerns of his own city consituents (black ladies) concerned over his actions (inaction) with police interactions with the locals.
If Mayor Petey wants to address real questions, why doesn’t he question why Hawaii, a sea-locked state BY ITSELF has ANY interstate highways at all... Yep....and they do the same thing this stretch in question does..
