The New York Times has been accused of plumbing new depths in its campaign of 'sneering', 'anti-British propaganda', as an article revealed - with apparent surprise - that it would be up to UK taxpayers to pay for a funeral for their own head of state.
The story labeled it a 'hefty price tag' amid rampant inflation in Britain, but readers were unamused, with some announcing they were cancelling their subscriptions following a barrage of attacks on the monarchy within days of the Queen's death.
America's 'paper of record' has long been accused of displaying a haughty ignorance of the reality of life in the UK, with reports in recent years suggesting Brits spend their time 'cavorting in swamps' and, until recently, existed on a diet of 'porridge and boiled mutton'.
For many, its latest report only confirmed this impression, with Andrew Neil suggesting it wasn't exactly revelatory to point out that a funeral for a head of state who had served with unfailing duty for 70 years would be funded by that country's taxpayers.
'Amazing scoop from the New York Times reveals that the Queen's funeral will be paid out of taxation,' he tweeted. 'Must be a first for any head of state anywhere. Or … maybe there are no depths to which the @nytimes won't stoop in its anti-British propaganda.'
British conservative commentator Nile Gardiner added: 'The sneering attacks on Britain and the Monarchy from The New York Times and America's hate-filled woke Left are tedious, nasty and unpleasant.
'They may appeal to a small audience of elite Socialists, but the vast majority of Americans, who love the Queen, will not be impressed.'

I'm an American. I am not impressed with monarchy. I think we might have even fought a war or two to get out from under one...
The New York Times has a haughty ignorance of what life is like in America.
It sells.
So the paper’s engaging in sedition won’t get them to cancel, but dissing the late QE II will...
Okaaaaay...
The NYT supported Hitler over Churchill, soooo...
I can have respect for someone like Queen Elizabeth without appreciating a monarchy, which I don’t.
I expect there are many who feel like me, who are predisposed to hate the scummy NYT.
I don’t get this love of royalty. I think it is only sustained because women love prince and princess fairytales. The whole concept should be put on the scrap heap of history.
Americans are probably under the impression that the Prime Minister is head of state and that the monarch is a useless anachronism.
The United States funds our presidential funerals. As well as a ridiculous amount of security for former presidents and their families.
“I can have respect for someone like Queen Elizabeth without appreciating a monarchy, which I don’t.”
Hear Hear. Well said.
Kinda like appreciating & respecting Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump without appreciating the Republican Party, which I don’t.
Very well said...that drives that home quite well in a way we can understand!
“I don’t get this love of royalty. I think it is only sustained because women love prince and princess fairytales. The whole concept should be put on the scrap heap of history.”
It is not love of royalty. It is respect for the once might and majesty of British tradition which has nothing whatsoever to do with fairy tales.
How does it feel to be in bed with the woke cancel culture?
I’m pretty sure we pay for our presidents’ official funeral services.
I’m not “impressed with monarchy”, either. But it is interesting, and it’s England’s business and not our business.
Also interesting is the fact that so many FReepers have positive statements about Zelensky (thug, money launderer, murderer), but pooh-pooh a queen who’s pretty much was an upstanding head of state for 70 years.
“The Old Gray Lady” doesn’t deserve any respect at all.
Queen Elizabeth II was an icon in her time, and I honor her memory.
Elizabeth’s death and burial, with all of it’s pageantry, will restore much of the British patriotism which has been disappearing in recent years.
One could argue that a constitutional republic, while it may be nearly an ideal system in theory, in practice has resulted in what we have today: systemic corruption, dysfunction, and a $30 trillion national debt. UK national debt is the equivalent of just under $2.4 trillion.
A ruler who wields power with benevolence and compassion deserves admiration and respect. There has never been a doubt that Queen Elizabeth II loved her country and it’s people. And the feeling is mutual. That’s why there’s a 2.5 mile line outside of Westminster Hall.
Are US citizens allowed to have foreign titles? As in the fuss over Megain and Harry’s children.
In 2021, the debt-to-GDP ratio was 124% for the U.S. and 86% for the UK.
I guarantee if the issue were the (Muslim) Mayor of London, or Meghan Carbunkle, the New York Times would find him wonderful. It is more about anti-white hate, anti British history & tradition etc.
