Three former U.S. Senate candidates in recent weeks have coalesced behind Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka and not behind the 21-year incumbent, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).
Candidates suspending their campaigns and falling behind Tshibaka is exactly what she needs to win because of Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system, which forwards votes from lesser candidates behind stronger ones as balloting progresses. Their early departure from the race and endorsement of Tshibaka will have an impact on the amount of votes that will fall to Tshibaka over Murkowski, as the second and third ballots present themselves.
The latest example of a candidate dropping from the race to back Tshibaka is Pat Nolin. The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, who finished fifth in the August 16 primary, announced his support of Tshibaka Wednesday.
“Alaska doesn’t need a 25-year career politician who helps Joe Biden but obstructed Trump,”Nolin made the statement in a release. “Murkowski isn’t independent or for Alaska, but instead she’s become increasingly liberal and votes along with her liberal D.C. friends. Kelly Tshibaka will fight for Alaska – for our jobs, our resources, and our 2nd Amendment rights.”
Nolin is the third candidate to back Tshibaka. On Monday, Buzz Kelley, a fellow Republican candidate, suspended his campaign and endorsed Tshibaka. Before that, Edgar Blatchford, a former U.S. Senate Democrat candidate, bowed out and endorsed Tshibaka.

Why did Alaska adopt this stupid voting system? It’s like it was tailor-made to make Lisa Murkowski win in 2022.
Its looking more and more like Murkowski’s goose is cooked.
For the same reason they have murkowski in the first place for years. Steve Deace talks about turning Iowa red by eliminating stupid primaries and using caucuses or conventions. The proof is, Iowa is red and enacts conservative policies.
Murkowski PUT it in place for THAT reason
All RINOs must be voted out. You know what to do Alaska.
“It’s like it was tailor-made to make Lisa Murkowski win in 2022.”
That’s previously why RCV was installed in AK. She and her attorney were behind it.
But I worry that Murkowski will “win”, even with these guys endorsing her opponent. The same way Biden “won” the presidency. It’ll be decided on the counting process, not the voting process.
Come on Alaska.....ditch DiFi’s B*tch!! GO KELLY!!
Now target vote on the ballot for one candidate rather than ranking several.
You answered your own question.
No way was Murky going to win a Republican primary.
Now coalescing on OZ and have a majority in the Senate
“Its looking more and more like Murkowski’s goose is cooked.”
As we saw in the Special Election primary, the top vote-getter in the first round ended up being the winner. So I think that’s likely to happen again.
But will Democrats in November vote for the Democrat as their first choice or for Murkowski?
If Tshibaka can manage to come in first in the first round, I think she has a good chance of taking out Murkowski.
We’ll see.
This voting scheme reminds me of Louisiana’s “open primary” system where all eligible candidates participate, even more than one candidate of the same party being on the ballot. If any one candidate does not receive at least 50% plus one vote, then the two candidates with the highest number of votes face each other in a runoff weeks later. The runoff candidates may even belong to the same party.

<>Now target vote on the ballot for one candidate rather than ranking several.<>
From an article I recently read, that would typically disqualify the ballot.
Gotta hand it to the rats and their rino enablers; they never give up. No corruption is too low in their quest for power.
Many states besides LA have that system, although LA “was” the first (I am from Louisiana and lived there when the LA Constitution was amended to put this arrangement in place). This change in way of voting led to the ascendancy of Republicans in state offices.
If parties want to assure only one candidate per party, they should have (and fund) their own caucus systems...not spend taxpayer dollars on state-run primary elections.
I think the only other Senate Republican that would top my list for a primary defeat would be Romney.
