BAS has always been for the service member’s meals in lieu of chow hall meals. It isn’t, nor ever was, intended to be enough to feed a family.
And drive to work using $6 a gallon gas
IIRC, he also fixed a little 'transportation' problem, too.
I believe there were soldiers already on food stamps before Reagan took office and increased their pay.
The troops get free MREs in combat zones. Wives and kiddies hardest hit.
So a lowly E-3 gets a potential $52K a year plus free medical and cannot afford food for his family and needs assistance?
Gezz wish I had been paid that back in the 60s!
The Russian military is the end-state of this sort of thing.

No. You’d have to “legalize” theft and reselling of equipment for all officers to begin to approach the RGF corruption
Sounds about right for E3 pay back in the 60s-70s at $150 month or $1800 a year. Not counting overseas pay, hazardous duty pay, or combat pay. But back then everyone hated the military so they took away pay and benefits to show how little they regarded troops - today they just torture them with pronoun and DIE classes in lieu of real training.
Ain’t government logic grand Moe.
We lived in a trailer park, living “hand to mouth”.
But, I guess we were a little better off than my friend and her husband.
We had AC, and we had a car, while they only had a motorcycle.
Finally, just a few days before she was due, they scraped up enough money for a used car.
But we were doing well compared to what some military families went through in WWII.
One of my husband’s COs had photos of he and his wife hauling water in a tank mounted on a handcart to the boxcar that they lived in.
Perfect!
