Hounded by accusations from Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz that he is avoiding debates, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman has finally agreed to one in late October in Harrisburg.
Fetterman’s campaign said Wednesday that he has committed to an Oct. 25 debate hosted by Nexstar Television that will be shown live on network affiliates reaching all 67 Pennsylvania counties.
“We said from the start that we’d do a debate, which John reiterated very clearly again last week,” said Rebecca Katz, a senior advisor to the Fetterman campaign, in a statement. “Enough distractions. It’s time to talk about the issues.”
A week ago, Fetterman’s campaign said that he would commit to just one debate in mid- or late-October.
The Oct. 25 debate will air live on nine stations: WPXI in Pittsburgh, WHTM in Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon/York, WPHL in Philadelphia, WTAJ in Johnstown/Altoona/State College, WBRE and WYOU in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, WJET and WFXP in Erie, and WYTV in Youngstown, Ohio.
Fetterman’s campaign said the debate would also be livestreamed by Nexstar affiliates in adjacent states.
Oz and Republicans have battered Fetterman for not previously committing to any debates.
At a recent press conference with Oz, Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Lehigh County, whose open seat is at stake in the election, said Fetterman’s refusal to commit raises questions about his medical fitness to hold office.
Earlier Wednesday, Oz’s campaign said he had committed to a seventh debate on Oct. 3 in Hershey hosted by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. It would be broadcast on the Pennsylvania Cable Network.
Oz’s campaign did not have an immediate response to Fetterman committing to the Oct. 25 debate.
Fetterman, the state’s lieutenant governor, declined two debates for early September. He has acknowledged that he is suffering from auditory processing issues while recovering from his May 13 stroke.
While Oz has stepped up his attacks on Fetterman not committing to debates, Fetterman’s campaign has said it has simply been a “stunt” to distract from Oz’s record.

Gee, why not wait until the night before election day?
I’m sure the GOP knows that this means that Fetterman has lined up an army of media shills to help him before, during and after the “debate.”
If not, then they’re asking for trouble.
Oz ATTACKS?
What’s Mohammet Oz gonna do, give him a pinch?
Flap his hands in a menacing fashion?
Say a mean thing?
PennLive is a dem mouthpiece.
Nonconspiritorial explanation: Fetterman still has a mixed up brain and needs as much time to recover from his stroke to give himself a puncher’s chance in a debate.
Slightly more conspiratorial version: the majority of dems will have voted absentee by that point, and the dems will know how many votes they have to make up to get a chance at winning.

Uncle Festerman is getting desperate.
He’ll get the Chris Wall-ass treatment.
He won’t show up.
After a Month of Mail-In Voting.
That’s not going to fly.
Waiting for the Oz response. He has already accepted 7 other debates.
That's close to Halloween.
They use somebody in a Fetterman costume as a stand-in..
Oz might send a mean tweet. Oh the horrors!
I heard that Uncle Fester originally wanted 9 November for the debate.

Oz should have an empty chair debate every week from now till the election.
Why not December 25th?
Maybe the thing emerging from Fetterman’s neck can debate Oz.
