On Sunday, Democrat gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs’ campaign notified the Citizens Clean Elections Commission that she would not be participating in any debate with the Republican candidate Kari Lake. Hobbs was given seven days to work with the Commission staff on acceptable terms for a traditional style debate rather than the separate townhalls she proposed.
Hobbs’ campaign manager Nicole DeMont released a statement on Sunday attacking Lake.
“Secretary Hobbs remains willing and eager to participate in a town hall style event, such as the forum she participated in last week in which Arizonans were able to hear directly from Sec. Hobbs about her in-depth policy plans and how she would approach governing this state,” wrote DeMont. “Unfortunately, debating a conspiracy theorist like Kari Lake — whose entire campaign platform is to cause enormous chaos and make Arizona the subject of national ridicule — would only lead to constant interruptions, pointless distractions and childish name-calling. Arizonans deserve so much better than Kari Lake, and that’s why we’re confident Katie Hobbs will be elected our next governor.”
Lake called Hobbs a “coward,” and Lake is not the only one who is critical of Hobbs.
This weekend on Meet The Press, in response to host Chuck Todd’s surprise at Lake’s strength as a candidate, Amy Walter of The Cook Political Report said, “being on television as she – Kari Lake was – for 20 years, there is a sense from voters that ‘I know this person and whatever is said in attack ads etc., well maybe that is just politics because she can’t be like that because she has been in my living room for the last 20 years.’”
Matt Gorman, a Republican strategist said the race is “neck-and-neck” because Katie Hobbs ” is not a good candidate.”

In her performance at a recent Chamber of Commerce townhall event, in which the two candidates appeared separately, Hobbs struggled to answer questions and suffered from an almost adolescent sounding voice, while Lake took her usual commanding tone and pledged to cut income taxes. When the event ended, Hobbs left immediately while Lake remained to answer questions from those at the event and from the media.
Lake had already agreed to debate and as Hobbs appeared more and more unwilling, Lake offered additional incentives, including allowing Hobbs to know the questions in advance and even to select the moderator.
Hobbs won the Democratic primary in spite of dodging the Clean Elections debate with her Democratic primary challenger, Marco Lopez, claiming she had Covid.

off topic a bit , but.
I’ve never heard her speak, so can’t say about her. But this description reminds me of some people such as Ocasio-Cortez. She sounds like a know it all teenage girl. Perhaps that is a common affliction of liberal women.......
Arizona Citizens will see Hobbs as a Coward.
Because she is a coward.
I hope this is reflected in the polls.
There’s only ONE reason you don’t debate...you know you will lose and it will hurt you.
It took more than the usual effort, but finally I found a video of Hobbs speaking. Now I understand completely. If I were her, I would certainly want the voters to hear me speak as little as possible, and if it could be done, not at all until after the election.
There’s only ONE reason you don’t debate...you know you will lose and it will hurt you.
——————I fixed it ——
There’s only ONE reason A DEMOCRAT won’t debate...you know you will lose and it will hurt you.
I can see a republican not debating because of media bias.
There’s only ONE reason you don’t debate...you know you will lose and it will hurt you.

You bet, there is no other reason.
Fetterman in PA won't debate Oz because for a number of reasons - he understands he'd lose and lose badly.
If I were Hobbs or Fetterman I would avoid debating in any way because it would further seal my fate.
Implication being that part one is because of part two, when in fact without lying pollsters and the probability of Hobbs-masterminded fraud Lake would win by 20 points.
They don’t even feel they owe the voters anything. Why would you hire such a person?
Get up there and debate an empty podium, let the voters see her cowardice.
EMPTY CHAIR DEBATE!!!
I can’t say as I blame Ol’ Katie for not wanting to debate Kari.
Kari is one smart cookie, and fierce (and right). I wouldn’t want to debate her either. Be like going up against a grizzly bear in hand to paw and jaw combat.
To paraphrase G. Gordon Liddy: Kari should come out and say she won’t debate Katie, because she refuses to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed woman.
She needs to do an empty chair debate.
Just have a moderator ask questions and then give the empty chair 30 seconds to respond to each one.
The VOTERS want KARI LAKE!

You are NOT off topic one bit.. but rather SPOT ON.
Nearly ALL LIBERAL women in politics sound and talk like they're adolescents... mentally they are. That includes Pelosi.
Yup. Just recall Christine Blasey Ford and her annoying croaky little girl voice at the Kavanaugh hearings and you got Katie Hobbs speaking style. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to normal people but apparently plays well to the brainwashed liberal female set.
No, Katie! Kari Lake will make Arizona the subject of national admiration!!!!
Agreed. She sounds like a thirteen-year-old girl. I would imagine in a debate where things might get heated that tonal quality would become amplified making her sound unserious
