To me this seems to violate the premise of ‘one person one vote’.
It’s just plain wrong...since when do you vote for 3 people or 4....or ten on one ballot??
Sounds stupid and unnecessarily complicated
Yes, I do, but I won’t be home. I’ll be at their house!
You’re a leftist Democrat. We get it.
I do not see how a referendum can be Constitutionally used to put such a system in place, as was done in Alaska.
The Constitution is clear.
The state legislatures are to determine how elections are done in their state.
What a crock.
So instead of a clear winner, even without the “majority” you end up with a 4th place finisher.
Like Janice Mills in ME Or that dumblecrat in AK.
THIS is a stupid idea. Unless you are a dumblecrat.
If the GOP wants to run primaries their own way, then they ought to pay for them.
I don't prefer ranked voting, I just think that as the gimmedats more and more outnumber the productive folks, then ranked voting is inevitable. We need to deal with that rather than stomp our feet and whine about how bad we think it is.
I see numerous problems with the RCV system:
A person who is so underprivileged that they can’t be expected to get a photo ID is capable of figuring out ranked choice voting? And remembering to specify the multiple ranked choices for each race? DOUBTFUL
Who cares about the multiple people running for a single office? This effectively gives more power to candidates who can strip off a few votes, as their supporters get a second vote (and maybe a third vote) in a single election.
This truly is “getting a second bite at the apple”. The dynamics of a run-off are different than the dynamics of RCV.
RCV leads to delays in the reporting of results. In fact, we already have too many delays in the counts and to say that many of the delays in recent years have been “fishy” to to only state the obvious. Delayed reporting will lead to further lack of trust, and opportunities for bad actors.
Yeah, if no one wins at the first level of RCV, then examine ALL of the 2nd level votes.
Then one could put, say, OrangeManBad, in on all three levels if there was no one else running who is acceptable.
Can you “undervote” in ranked choice by selecting ONLY your # 1?
If this tends to work in the Dems favor, then I can see it expanding throughout the blue states and blue districts in red states. I can see the exact opposite happening in red states and red districts in blue states.
One more step along the road to a civil (or uncivil?) divorce among the once united states.
“I thought you were some sort of libertarian who believes people ought to pay their own way.”
Not sure how you get supporting one person multiple votes from that.
I live in Maine.
Rank choice voting does not apply to governor and other state races, such as for Maine House and the Maine Senate.
A judge ruled that the Maine Constitution mentions the word “plurality,” whereas the federal Constitution does not. Therefore, RCV in Maine only applies to federal House and Senate races in Maine as well as the presidency, but not to state races.
Paul LePage is running again for governor this year. He was term-limited in 2018.
Former Second District GOP congressman Bruce Poliquin lost his seat in 2018 even though he received 2,200 votes MORE than his democrat opponent, Afghan war vet Jared Golden. Both candidates received fewer than 50% of the vote.
In order for RCV in Maine to NOT kick in, a federal candidate has to receive at least 50% of the vote plus one individual vote. Bruce Poliquin is running in November to try to reclaim his House seat.
Here in Maine, I fill in only the first “oval,” for the candidate I want.
I have no second, third or fourth choice, so I leave them blank.
Most people do just that.
Your first and only choice is the one that counts in this scenario.
The way I see it, and I may be wrong:
ONE man...THREE votes.
If I’m wrong, I’m sorry
But if I’m right...SHAME ON ALASKA.
Do all states have legislators?
