Ukrainian Officials Drew on U.S. Intelligence to Plan Counteroffensive
The New York Times ^ | September 10, 2022 | Julian E. Barnes and Helene Cooper

Senior Ukrainian officials stepped up intelligence sharing with their American counterparts over the summer as they began to plan the counteroffensive that allowed them to make dramatic gains in the northeast in recent days, a shift that allowed the United States to provide better and more relevant information about Russian weaknesses, according to American officials.

Throughout the war, the United States has provided Ukraine with information on command posts, ammunition depots and other key nodes in the Russian military lines. Such real-time intelligence has allowed the Ukrainians — who U.S. officials acknowledge have played the decisive role in planning and execution — to target Russian forces, kill senior generals and force ammunition supplies to be moved farther from the Russian front lines.

But earlier on, American intelligence officials said they often had a better understanding of Russia’s military plans than of Ukraine’s. Concerned that sharing their operational plans could highlight weaknesses and discourage continued American support, the Ukrainians were closely guarding their operational plans even as American intelligence was gathering precise details on what the Kremlin was ordering and Russian commanders were planning.

But as Ukraine laid its plans to strike back against the Russians, senior leaders in Kyiv decided that sharing more information with the United States would help secure more assistance, American officials said.

Senior U.S. officials declined to say how much details from the counteroffensive plan Ukraine had shared and how much advice the United States had offered. But one official said Americans had “constantly” discussed with Kyiv ways that Ukraine could blunt the Russian advance in the country’s east.

Especially Russian aircraft, and Russian pilots to fly them.

So, was Russia caught by surprise? No. They had at least one week’s warning of the impending Ukrainian attack. If you want to believe that Russia’s intelligence service is incompetent or was deceived in this operation, enjoy the fantasy. The Russian planners had a couple of choices. They could have moved their forces into position earlier but that would have tipped off the Ukrainians and west that the planned offensive was compromised.

Alternatively, the Russian planners may have decided to mask their movements and made choices about which villages and cities to defend and which to abandon. If Russia had moved preemptively to reinforce Izyum that would have raised warning flags for the Ukrainian and NATO planners.

I agree with Andrei Martyanov’s take–the Russians knew it was coming and chose to let the Ukrainians flood the zone in order to eventually hit the Ukrainian forces with a massive counter attack. The Ukrainians are no longer in fortified defensive positions and their lines of communication to support the forward troops are now defined precisely. The Ukrainian attack has not destroyed nor disrupted Russia’s air, artillery, rocket and missile assets. Attacking the Ukrainian units is an easier task, not more difficult.

I am not privy to the Russian plan. But what I do know is that the planning process required to deploy the troops and equipment moving into Kharkov was not a panicked response. Hollywood can create the illusion of rapid movement of military troops, but the real world requires alerting units, making sure they are properly supplied and then undertaking the logistic task of moving those units into combat. This means the planning was deliberate, not a crisis response.

Yes you could, and it’s acknowledged that a lot of this is derived from German practice.

Today, NFKZ (a 20 something Russian Youtuber) was going through old soviet Stuff at his friends Tblisi apartment and they found a Soviet Map of the world from 1972.

The Map showed one, unified Korea and Taiwan was part of China, but Germany was divided, so it wasn’t like it was a simplified map.

In Vietnam and Korea, Russians were flying MiG’s.

Not a crisis response? These people are abandoning equipment and ammo wholesale and fleeing in civvie cars.

Those units are combat ineffective until rounded up, reorganized and reequipped.

And there was no counterattack force handy, or it would be there now, when the attackers are still stretched out and exhausted. The more they wait the more Ukrainian follow-on units will come up.

This argument is yet another of the typical “but we MEANT to do that!” propaganda line.

So the Bottom line is Russia can never do anything wrong.

Got it.

Now I know. I was worried for a minute their with all the blowing up and retreating that was happening.

“If you want to believe that Russia’s intelligence service is incompetent”

Based on the evidence of six months of a disastrous war, yes I do believe that.

This isn’t a Proxy war between the US and Russia.

Its an actual Russian conventional war against a rag tag bunch of computer programmers and plumbers and accountants equipped with the world’s best weapons (none of which are made in Russia).

Wait a minute, Comrade Kazan, this time last week you were claiming that the Kherson counteroffensive was a total failure, that thousands of Ukrainian soldiers had been slaughtered, and that Ukraine had lost the war.

Now, you're claiming that the Russians deliberately abandoned those northeastern towns and cities as part of some masterplan that would enable them to attack the Ukrainians more easily?

I am so confused by your claims, Comrade Kazan!

One man has the power to end it tomorrow. The guy who invaded a sovereign nation.

Its not OUR war any more than Yemen or Nigeria or Etheopia or Gaza are our wars. We are Still in Syria/Iraq, so I guess that is also still our war.

Russia knows America doesn’t give a shit about those brown people wars, so they target their propaganda to us about their war.

I am ejoying Russia getting its ass handed to them and the Greenies freezing in Europe will be fine by me, too.

Don’t care. Our boys aren’t dying and Russia is learning valuable lessons about international aggression. They are just slow learners.
