Can the economy grow for ever?
World Economic Forum ^ | 9/122 | Anna Bruce-Lockhart

The global economy has been growing for the past 200 years. Traditionally, that’s been seen as a good thing - a larger pile of money that would lead to a larger pile of opportunities for everyone.

But the ‘tide that lifts all boats’ theory feels less substantial with every new economic crisis. As a global recession looms, and as we veer closer to the limits of our natural resources, and as inequality spirals around the world - a new billionaire was minted every 26 hours during the pandemic - we have to ask: is infinite growth possible on a finite planet?

It's the central question in this video explainer. Created by world-class storytellers TED-Ed in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, this entertaining and informative film questions the idea of growth for growth's sake and imagines a world beyond it.

“post growth”, that’s the goal. “limits of our natural resources”, what a damnable lie. The world’s awash in natural resources. These are our new green masters. You think it’ll be rough here. Imagine being one of the teeming third world billions who are seeing their future generations being locked into their grinding poverty by these power hungry fiends.

As the population grows, the economy must grow.

That is why the economies east of Suez are on the rise while Europe is stagnant or dying

It has nothing to do with the withering Russian or Chinese c economies that are failing for a different reasons

growth is the natural course for humans. It is only when real smart people and govts meddle with things do we have "crises".

But this is how these people think - its a zero sum game. The pie is only so big. Inequality spirals...

"Just let us run things and everything will be OK" and no one gets hurt.

No.

Says goon-girl neocommie author and silly tool of the globaloid billionaires she’s writing about.

These people, seriously, need a hostoric hanging and street-dragging. It’s the only thing that will stop them. They’re insane.

Growth is potentially as vast as the human imagination.

Abortion, EBT, and marijuana do a pretty good job of limiting it, though.

What model iPhone did you have 20 years ago?

What jet airliner did you fly on 75 years ago?

What Color Television were you watching 100 years ago?

Of course the economy can grow forever as long as technology advances forever.

The Chinese population is going to be lower in 30 years than it is today. Significantly lower.

Only Muslim countries will have significant population gains in the next 30 years and they won’t be listening to Klaus.

The population bomb has already exploded, and the WEF is trying to solve problems that solve themselves.

She’s confused pie limits with running out of other people’s pie.

One of the essential lies of socialism seem to be: “You have wealth only because you stole it from me.” This is what makes redistribution of wealth (equity) into a “fair” concept. The size of the pie is fixed. It is unfair that some get big slices and some get small. Let’s have a system in which everyone gets an equal share.

But wealth has been growing forever and the people who make it grow get bigger shares. That is the true essence of fairness.

Three hundred years ago the world was a pretty disgusting place if you had to live in it.

Agree. Look at all the forest fires out west. Why not cut wood for heat. These climate change pukes are mental. We have much oil and even China is drilling it off OUR coasts.

The population in Africa is exploding. Something like 40% of the population is under 15. Africa will double its population to 2.5 billion by 2050. With North America out of the grain exporting business, who will feed these Africans?

They've been asking that question throughout all time.

The average welfare recipient lives better today than the most affluent people of a hundred years ago.

A hundred years from now, the people living the most opulent lifestyles today will be considered primitive by the people of tomorrow.

Agreed. The WEF will tell you that we should have listened to Malthus 200 years ago and just starved to death.
