NEW YORK (WABC) -- Gov. Kathy Hochul has lifted the requirement to wear masks while riding mass transit during a news conference on Wednesday.
New signs will be displayed throughout the mass transit system letting riders know that masks are encouraged but optional.
The new guidance is effective immediately.
Hochul also stressed the importance of respecting the choices of others.

BART here in the SF Bay Area still has a mask mandate til Oct. 1. I rode BART yesterday without one and only 10% or so of riders opted to be maskless (including me).
Probably because it’s too dangerous to ride the subways so they’re empty.
Must be an election coming up eh? No doubt this horrible woman is “just following the Science”
It must be great to be in the signage business in NY. The mask signs along with the open mass shooting fire zones make for great business.
Governor Hag needs to keep her mask on so I don’t have to look away
Did Hochul see the light or is there an election coming in two months?
For the most part the only people wearing masks where I am are germaphobes and people that want to hide their identity.
The latter being the majority as there really is no other reason I can think of to wear a face diaper while driving alone, riding a bicycle in a very open space or walking in same.
Many criminals have been given a stay out of jail free card in the form of a 50 cent face covering for the last 2 years.
Better late than never.
LOL. It was already lifted in my Upstate neck of the woods. Can’t recall the last time I saw a driver with his/her muzzle pulled up...

What is a mask mandate?
I rode a subway in NYC a couple of weeks ago and I didn’t remember seeing anyone wearing a mask.
Until November 9th.
Also, the homeless around here, who almost never wore masks, seemed to come through COVID just fine. Their numbers are about the same as they were pre-COVID.
My guess is the mandates got lifted only because the governor's race here is tightening.
She did that while riding mass transit? I’d have thought she’d have done it from her office.
You can now remove your mask on the NYC subway, but you still might get your head bashed in by a recently released career felon.
